Frankie Manning spread swing dancing's popularity throughout the world while touring with Whitey's Lindy Hoppers in the 1930s and '40s. Dance writer and swing dancer Millman conducted extensive interviews with Manning for a vivid account of his career. Manning became a star in Harlem's popular Savoy Ballroom with his unique style, including dancing at a sharp angle to the ground like a track runner, speed and musicality. In a dance competition, Manning astonished the crowd with the first-ever Lindy aerial, or air step (where the man sends his partner flying). Later Manning toured with jazz greats such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and performed in several films, including Everybody Sings with Judy Garland. After a long hiatus from dancing, he was a consultant for Spike Lee's Malcolm X and coached a new generation of dancers in the swing dance revival of the '80s and '90s. I'm a swing dancer (lindy hopper) and this book was so helpful and interesting. I didn't know about a lot of the origins of phrases we use now, or realize that certain people knew each other. The writing style is friendly and engaging; I would probably enjoy this book even if I weren't a dancer.

Very good condition even if it's second hand! Came faster than planned.I just loved this book, will read it again, Frankie Manning is so funny and It's been a real pleasure to read all of his swinging adventures!

I have been a student and admirer of Frankie Manning's ever since my first dance lesson with him almost ten years ago. Frankie is a legendary dancer, an innovator and pioneer in the dance form called "Lindy Hop" that started in the Jazz Age in the streets of Harlem and continues to this day in clubs, schools and dancehalls all over the world.I've been hearing Frankie tell his inspiring stories for a long time now, but never with this rich detail and the larger historical context provided by Ms. Millman to back them up.From his days as a child at rent parties to the heyday of the Savoy Ballroom to performing internationally with the dance troupe Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, you follow the exciting growth of a young dancer. Then we follow Frankie into the war years and his dropping out of the swing world for several decades. Fortunately in the 1980s, Frankie is coaxed out of retirement and continues to do this day to teach and inspire others about this wonderful dance.Throughout it all, you cannot help but be touched by Frankie's grace, style and humor in navigating tumultuous, often racially-charged situations. I want to be Frankie when I grow up.A great read for anyone interested in African-american history, dance, or jazz.

I was fortunate to have met Frankie twice before I read the book. This gave me the face and voice to put the words to. As I read, it was as if Frankie was there talking to me with all the wit , humor and charm he has in person. Frankie's excitement in telling his stories makes you wish you could have been there with him. Frankie does a wonderful job of taking you through his life experiences in a way that you just can't put the book down. For me the book is about much more than dancing Lindy Hop. It's about how to live your life which is finding your passion and becoming the best, not to become famous or rich, but because it gives you purpose and that gives others inspiration. Thanks for putting Frankie's life into words. He is someone I wish my kids, grand kids and all future generations could have met. I hope this book soon becomes a movie so all the world can once again see Frankie Manning on the dance floor.

Certainly, every Lindy Hopper must read this book. But I think it's a beautiful and important book for people outside of the swing dance community too. Frankie Manning was an unsung hero. He and the other members of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers helped were instrumental in a dance that shaped and influenced our culture and our history.

This is a book every Lindy Swing Dancer should read. If you love Lindy, you should know the history, and most of all, know who Frankie Manning is!!!! I've bought one for each of my dance helpers as gifts of thank you. I got mine the day it was released!

Frankie Manning is a fascinating individual. I understand a lot more about swing dancing.

Before this book, I had never heard about Boko Haram and all the terrorist things happening in Nigeria. While not graphic at all, it still gets the point across of what is all going on and will leave you seriously thankful for the freedom we have here in America. a perfect historical fiction to add to your book shelf, though I don't recommend for younger readers and kids.

not due to style but to content. Pieces together from real stories by the kidnapped victims, this work would make for a great book study and should spur anyone who has read it to some sort of action.

This novel was such an emotional read. I wasn't aware that some of the things discussed happened to so many innocent people. I appreciate the fact that these authors chose to help tell this story and I enjoyed the format it was told in. If you haven't picked this book up yet give it a go...such an eye opener.

Buried Beneath the Baobab Treeby Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani, and Viviana Mazza is a heartbreaking account of one girl daily life in her home in the Borno state of Nigeria in late 2013 early 2014, and how quickly her way of life is destroyed when she is kidnapped by Boko Haram. Based on interviews with survivors that took place in the two years post-kidnapping. is a Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani is a Nigerian writer and journalist. Viviana Mazza is an Italian journalist and this fiction story is all the more heartbreaking when one realizes that every moment of it is based on facts.The book is written in brief one page or less stream of consciousness style scenes, similar to and vignettes or journal entries. The structure, narration of the story by an adolescent girl is very reminiscent of Scholastic's Dear America novels. The style makes it significantly easier to read as the story becomes heavier and more heartwrenching.The first half of it novel details her daily life and worries as a 13-year-old girl, from puberty to nerves regarding the results of her scholarship. The desire and importance placed on education are often similar to Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions. The story discusses pertinent issues in the current equal access on the basis of gender debate, as the main character often struggles with attending school while menstruating, and skips school, even though she is objectively the brightest student in the class. But it also questions the effectiveness of current measures of development aid, as a “pink van” shows up early in the novel and delivers 4 pads to the girls. The pads are too expensive in their area to be an effective means of menstrual care in their area, so the reader is forced to grapple with the effectiveness of handout style programmatic interventions.A short, well written, and timely story that I heavily recommend.

Searing and powerful, this book is beautifully written and impossible to put down, and handles a tough subject well.

I will be reading this again as well as look for more from this Author... Excellent book!!

This is a difficult but very necessary book for those of us who are chronic over shoppers. It isn't a joke, like is often portrayed, and this book treats it like the serious problem it is for many of us in this country. It can have devastating effects when we are unable to rein in our spending. This is an excellent book addressing the real problems. It is so specific about the problem, if you are one, it's tempting to quit reading, because it is describing you in less than acceptable terms, you know it's true, and don't really want to hear it.

The psychology piece is solid and the book started off strong with analyzing your shopping behavior right out of the gate. However there is an irritating amount of commentary on almost every page about dated methods of shopping that nobody in my generation has ever used, or likely ever will. The author spends a lot of time talking about phone ordering from catalogs (what?) and TV shopping channels (is that even still a thing?) and the author seems confused by online shopping. It's very obvious that the book was written 15 years ago.If you're in your 20s/30s and have never heard of phone ordering from a catalog (seriously, what?) you're going to have to sift through a lot of dated, irrelevant nonsense to get to the useful part of the book.

If you have bad shopping habits this book will benefit you so long as you are willing to dedicate yourself to doing all the exercises (which are plentiful). My problem was binge-shopping, where I would go months without buying much until I hit a low-point and spent hundreds of dollars (which I couldn't afford to spend) on make-up, clothes, anything that would help me feel better. This book helped me understand why I was using shopping as a relief mechanism, what was driving me to do it AND find solutions to overcome this problem. I'm glad that I had this resource to fall back on whenever I felt that I would withdraw. Thank you for this well-made book Dr. Benson!

Super interesting and insightful book. I've had a bit of a shopping issue for about 8 yrs now. Luckily it has never gotten super out of control, like opening up credit card after credit card, etc. I'm always able to pay off my debt, but I still need to know that I shouldn't always be shopping like I do. And especially for things that I don't NEED. This book breaks things down and sometimes really makes you look at what you're doing wrong. It doesn't make you feel good, but it's things that you should see.If you need help, get this book.

If you have a shopping problem, like an over the top issue with buying whatever just because you're bored or looking for something to do, this is the book for you. April Benson is a genius at getting at the real issues with shopping. Read the book, then reread it and actually do the activities. You will realize that you don't need to shop to be fulfilled. This is the most effective and helpful book I've read. If you want to shop less and enjoy life more, read this book.

Of the several books on the subject that I reviewed, this one presented the difficult, sensitive topic of excessive shopping in the least threatening, most readable manner. I also liked that the title is non-threatening. I am a retired psychotherapist and was searching for a book that might help a young person whose parents were concerned about her shopping habits.

I bought this to help myself with a bit of a shopping addiction but I got bored of it overall I still quit shopping so much but not because of this book.

Buying something to help you stop buying things is kind of hypocritical but there were a few good things in here. I didn't read the whole thing, I admit,but I did gain a little more awareness in my own behaviors.

I received this book in 2 days. It was in excellent condition. I probably own 30 Cuban cookbooks. This one will be one that i go back to regularly. I have already made the picadillo, masas de puerco, panquecitos and tomorrow will be fricasse de pollo. What drew me to this book were 2 things.First were the photos. I lived in Miami for 26 years. I know these pictures are not from Miami, but they remind me of Miami so much. Also in all my Cuban cookbooks there were no recipes for panquecitos. When i saw this book had one i had to have it. They are delicious little butter flavored pound cakes in a muffin form. I now live in Tennessee and they taste slightly like the corn bread muffins that you get at Famous Dave's restaurant . Furthermore, the first chapter containing recipes for the bakery items has several recipes not included in other books. I highly suggest this book.

I married into a Cuban family and absolutely love the cuisine, but almost none of my in-laws like to cook! Thus, I've spent the last several years collecting a mish-mash of Cuban recipes from a variety of sources. Now, with "The Cuban Table," I finally have a definitive, go-to Cuban cookbook.First things first, this cookbook is gorgeous. The sturdy cover, incredible photos, heavy paper stock, etc., all combine to create a cookbook that looks and feels like it belongs on the shelf of any serious home cook.But that means nothing if the recipes themselves are a bust. Thankfully, that is absolutely not the case here. What you'll find in this collection is essentially a "bible" of Cuban cuisine. Not only does it include just about any classic dish that you would find in any good Cuban restaurant, it also includes a number of lesser-known dishes that I was unfamiliar with. The recipes themselves are easy to follow and often include some good background information or stories to explain the recipes' origins.I've made about a half-dozen of the recipes so far, and they've all turned out fantastic. I've mostly been working my way through the classics--frijoles negros, arroz con pollo, ropa vieja, etc.--and everything so far has received rave reviews. In particular, the frijoles negros recipe turned out the single best batch of black beans I've ever made. Of course, as with any other cookbook, you might find that you want to tweak a recipe here or there to suit your own personal taste. For instance, while the ropa vieja was incredibly tasty just as written, when I make it again, I'll use green cabbage instead of red cabbage (I felt the red cabbage imparted too strong a flavor into the broth) and add a little bit of cumin, as I felt the dish was missing that particular element.Bottom line: If you love cooking Cuban food, this cookbook is a must-have.

I collect cookbooks and have for over 50 years. As a Cuban-American, a full two shelves of my cookbook stash is on Cuban cuisine. I have cookbooks that my mother brought from Cuba; the first booklets that were published by the exile community in the 60's (some of which are just a few pages stapled together). Not to mention binders and binders of recipes published in newspapers and magazines. I mention all this to establish myself as a Cuban cookbook fanatic. (I won't go into what kind of a cook I am, we can skip that part).Now, with my credentials in place, I have to say that, in my entire collection there isn't another book like this one. It is far and away, the BEST I've ever seen in every way that matters:--the recipes are genuine.--they are well-explained and easy to follow.--there is fascinating anecdotal information about them and their history.--traditional, current Cuban, and Cuban-American dishes are included.--It is almost encyclopedic in its scope.--they are presented and grouped logically.--the photography is beautiful.--the book is well-indexed and cross-referenced (not always a given in Latin cookbooks!)--the book (paper weight, quality, cover, layout, design, etc.) is first class.I have to congratulate the author for, not just her efficiency, but also for her sensitivity and her obvious love for her subject. I want to thank her not just on my own behalf but on behalf of my children's generation and other generations to come in both shores. And I have to congratulate myself on having had the sense to buy it the minute I saw it. I imagine that, someday, it will get a place of honor among my cookbooks but, for the time being, I'm just enjoying going on a culinary voyage of memory, imagination and taste.

I never write reviews but I felt this book deserved it. I am not a good cook. It’s no secret. But I love to eat, especially Cuban food. There are no good Cuban restaurants near me so hence my search for a cookbook for Cuban food. Believe me when I say this is the only one I will use from now on. The food is authentic, delicious, and most importantly, the recipes are easy to follow and turns out every time! It’s amazing. Rice has been very intimidating for me but these recipes make it possible for someone like me to make perfect rice every time! I love each and every recipe and the stories and pictures are just icing on the cake. Thank you so much for this book!

I haven't tried every recipe in this beautiful book, but what I have tried is delicious. It's important to read through the ones that interest you ahead of time since they may require marination overnight, or for several hours. But they are worth the effort. Ingredients are fairly easy to find. And, if you're careful, you will be able to duplicate the promised meals. No special chef skills are required. It's a great book for anyone who wants to experience more Cuban flavors.

I just love this book! My husband and brother in law are from Cuba, and we made several recipes from this book already!!! Always comes up amazing! We usually use the list of ingredients but not the amount, so it might be a little different from the book, but it gives you an amazing base to know how to cook what you want.

To say I loved this book seems strange. It is well-written, and truly gives you a glimpse into the life of someone with Bipolar I. It was hard to read only because I can't imagine what Mrs. Jefferies goes through on a daily basis. It was interesting, informative, and at times fun to read. Jefferies and Everson were a good team to bring this information to light and help those of us with no connection to Bipolar Disorder to have a better understanding of what it entails, and what it's like to live with it. God bless Kenneth and his continuing love and support of LeeAnn and their family.

First let me say, I'm not a fan of memoirs. Most are poorly written and ramble. This memoir, however is different. Well written, engaging, tear inducing - I found myself lost in LeeAnn's story and pulling for her the whole way. It read almost like a novel.Full disclosure - I have two close family members with bipolar. Reading LeeAnn's story is so refreshing. As horribly painful as parts are, I could relate to them on a deep level. Her story gives me hope for the men in my life who struggle like she does. I cried through half the book. It made me wish there were things I could go back and change about the way I relate to my bipolar men. It also made me glad that I've stuck with them for decades. Their pain is real. I love them, regardless. It's good to see how her family relates to her throughout. Especially her husband's response to her first real break. Even better, for me, the non-bipolar, was the chapter written by LeeAnn's daughter. The outside perspective is invaluable.Thank you, LeeAnn, for being brave and sharing your journey with us. I honestly think everyone married or related to someone with mental illness should read this. It's done me a world of good.

She achieved her dream and wants others with a bipolar diagnosis to know they can rise above their illness and achieve their dreams, not allowing the disease to define them. As a person who struggles with bipolar disorder, I was naturally drawn to LeeAnn Jefferies’ story. The fact that she was a top model for more than 16 years added to my intrigue. I felt like I was sitting on a wicker chair on a wrap-around porch listening to LeeAnn tell her story, her Southern accent and flare on display between our sips of sweet tea. I appreciated her authenticity. "I know what it’s like to be afraid of my own mind."  "Oh, I hated it, I hated it! But I learned to live within the hell of it. Because that’s what it was. Hell. With all the good going on in my life–with all the God at work–I had come to a sure truth: I knew exactly where the devil’s playground resided. And it was with me all the time. Right there, in my mind." "Most of us can only live each day as it comes. But those with bipolar disorder will either live those days bouncing off the clouds or clawing our way through the mud." I’m thankful I’m neither in the clouds or the mud these days. The Bipolar Experience is a good resource for family and friends of those with bipolar disorder. Eva and LeeAnn sprinkle facts about the illness throughout the book, but they approach it in the context of her story, not as a medical encyclopedia. I could relate to LeeAnn’s goal-oriented side of bipolar disorder. It’s a little known fact that a bipolar person tends to fixate on a goal–however big or small–until they achieve it. Many times, a person with bipolar disorder is viewed as extremely productive. I could see that in LeeAnn’s story–and in mine. As much as I wanted to read The Bipolar Experience in one sitting, I struggled to read non-stop because I swing more to the depressive side of bipolar. I needed to take some breaks from reading it when I found myself swinging low. I would caution those who struggle with mental illness to be aware of that possibility prior to reading it. Awareness is key. The story hops back and forth through key events in LeeAnn’s life, which as, LeeAnn herself admits, is a glimpse into the life and mind of a person with bipolar. "There are times in the telling of this story when I worry that I cannot keep the reader on track. Then again, this is a book about the bipolar experience, so why should I be able to do that? After all, my life has been up and down, down and up. Around a left-turn corner. Around a right-turn corner." I can understand the rationale for that approach. However, as a person with bipolar disorder, I found it difficult to follow her journey. People who struggle with the illness are often obsessed with things being in a specific order–to the point of OCD. (LeeAnn mentioned her struggles with OCD too.) In order to create a linear progression of her life, I had to, as a classic sign of a bipolar person, go back and highlight the year in each chapter to understand what happened first, next, and so on. Nonetheless, the non-linear approach is a good representation of a bipolar mind for those who don’t face it firsthand. I know family and friends of bipolars will appreciate the chapters by her husband and daughter. They were honest, heartfelt, and demonstrated the power of a strong support system. The importance of a good doctor is a continuous thread in the book. Overall, I recommend The Bipolar Experience by LeeAnn Jefferies and Eva Marie Everson to family and friends of those struggling with the nauseating see-saw of this illness. For those who face this struggle, The Bipolar Experience is a reminder that God can use our circumstances (including illnesses) for good, but only if we let Him. LeeAnn is a great example of that. I am. You can be too.

Jennifer Waldeck (Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara) is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Chapman University, in Orange, California, where she teaches undergraduates and is on the core faculty of the M.S. program in Health and Strategic Communication. She specializes in instructional and organizational communication research, with an emphasis on the effective use of new and emerging technologies for learning purposes. Her research has appeared in such journals as Communication Monographs, Communication Education, The Journal of Applied Communication Research, Communication Research Reports, and The Journal of Business Communication. It gives you examples and little stories with each chapters. Would recommend this online book. Had no problems with it.

I bought this book as a reference, I am travelling to teach run training outside USA, and there does not seem anything on the book that gives me access to instructors materials or the other promised Value free stuff or ebook access. I need help from anyone here. I even when online and have requested for Instructors access still waiting. this is an expensive book and i am totally stuck with it, one reason i bought it so I can use the supplementary materials with my classes.

The digital version was great to navigate and easy to use. I could easily jump from page to page. It also synced with between two devices to keep me on the same page in both places (iPad and iPhone). That was neat. I was able to take my textbook with me to China and to Ohio on my iPad instead of a 4 pound large textbook that would be quite awkward to manhandle on an airplane.Three stars because the case studies are either out of date or irrelevant. Mary Kay pulled out of India years ago. X-1 Audio is no longer in business. The guitar manufacturer's video is dated 2008. These are just three examples of out of date case studies. NOT impressed, especially since this is billed as fully revised and updated edition.The stats (sales numbers, graphs and such) that referred to industry sales, rankings and such don't give dates. Some of the text is obviously written in 2015 as it referenced company plans future plans for that year. This edition was published Feb 2016.Authors/Publishers: FAIL. Try again and update your charts, stats and case studies. NOT IMPRESSED.

Realized too little too late. For future buyers, make sure it is the proper edition, I was not on top of it myself so let my loss be a lesson to you. Double check and make sure you get the correct edition. Do not pay $70+ for a $12 book. College is already expensive enough without people scamming you, so just be aware they are out there.

Rented this book for a family member. Much better and less expensive than buying outright. Am encouraging all family members who need textbooks to try rentals instead of buying.

The book itself was in good condition. However, had it clearly stated that an access code was NOT included with the book, I would had purchased elsewhere. STANDALONE is not a clear indicator. Other retailers use STANDALONE to indicate that the particular book is not a part of a series. It stands alone, no book before nor after ( ex. Harry Potter books).I would have loved to give 5 stars. But this unfortanate matter with the access code obliged me to do 3.
