Review

An NCSS Notable Social Studies Trade BookA Junior Library Guild Selection“Tougias' third-person narrative, condensed and more tightly focused than the adult version, brings to life the struggles and heroism of the sailors and rescuers alike, highlighting life lessons learned. . . A sure-fire hit with young readers who are always ready for a good disaster tale.” ―Kirkus Reviews"The dramatic narrative is engaging and won’t disappoint students who enjoy adventure or rescue stories" ―School Library Journal"This true story . . . reads like a thriller, with one thing after another going wrong and each challenge seemingly impossible to overcome. The courage displayed by the team may inspire readers to learn more about their exciting (if life-threatening) careers."-Booklist

Another fantastic, exciting true adventure told by Michael Tougias. He is an amazing author. I have read almost all his books. Once you start reading----it's hard to put it down. When reading this story, you feel like your're right there at the scene. He does an incredible amount of research into the back ground off all the characters involved. If you like non fiction and stories about boats and the sea read this book. Captain Tony Smith

This book was incredible!!!!!!!I could not stop reading it.You always wanted to know what happended next.Istarted losing track of time when I read it.

Great story and told well. Bought for my great nephew but also read it myself.

Great story and extremely well written. I felt like I was there.

Michael J. Tougias’ book about an incredible at-sea rescue left me speechless. While this version I read is stripped down to a matter-of-fact account, I was nonetheless on tenterhooks wondering what would happen next. Everyone who loves adventure, SAR, the sea, friendships, and life-or-death situations will like this book. I was most impressed by the account of the rescue swimmer. He is truly a giant among men. I was really glad Tougias waited until the last line of the book to let us know that there is actual footage of the rescue attempt from the helicopter. Reading the story before watching the video is IMPERATIVE, as it means about a thousand times more knowing what the men captured on film went through before the footage begins and throughout the video.Every home and library could benefit from having this book and others like it. It encourages us to follow our dreams, try difficult things, and never give up.I do have a couple of criticisms for the book. There is a photographic insert of 8 pages in the middle of the book that COMPLETELY spoils the ending. It is a rescue story! I am reading to find out what happened to J. P. and Ben and Raul and Drew and Nevada and Scott and the pictures tell me what happened to all of them when I am only halfway through! I also thought the writer should have referenced and emphasized the title a bit more to help the younger readers understand why the book was given that title. That being said, I loved the book and hope to read the full length version at some point.

Wow! God bless everyone involved in this incredible rescue story! The amount of bravery and selflessness the crew and rescuers demonstrated while facing death is the epitome of nobility. My children (ages 11 and 9) and I hunkered down at night as I read them this book over the course of a couple of weeks. We all enjoyed and looked forward to this time together to read this amazing adventure story. We were all on the edge of our seats and whenever it was time to stop reading to go to bed all I heard was "Aaaawwww!" It was so exciting that we didn't want to put the book down. I pray that everyone involved in this story is able to be at peace with the past and live in the present. Anyone having trouble doing this may want to read "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle.

Fantastic read. I couldn't put it down. I read it for the Cybils Award. Even people who do not like nonfiction should love this book. It is written like a fiction novel while still being a true story. This is an amazing writer.

I'm 12 year old this book is awsome.I am the daughter of NevadaSmith.
