This is a great text on cloud computing covering not only the fundamental concepts, but also taking a practitioners view-point. It covers in-depth, the features, motivation and security in the introductory chapters. It builds upon that foundation and considers multiple case studies including taking a very detailed look at one of the complex workflows and looking at migration challenges and approaches. Covered at an introductory level are the billing practices and VM types at one of the big cloud providers (AWS) and latest trends in the Cloud space. I specially enjoyed reading through the points to ponder section in each of the chapters.I would recommend this text to as a good fit for anyone who needs to have a good grasp of cloud computing - it's pros and cons from a neutral party.

This book covers a lot of ground and is very useful for both students in academia ( senior undergraduates and graduate students ) - as well as working professionals and practitioners. The authors are highly experienced and have done a very good job covering a very active industry. The book starts with a abbreviations and definitions section which is useful to both starting users and as a reference for practitioners. A history and foundations chapter follows with the cloud computing pyramid and roots described. The next 4-5 chapters form the heart of the book - describing private and public clouds, performance, workload characterization and resource allocation (a important subject), cloud management and monitoring - and information security which is a very relevant subject. Industry migration to the cloud is discussed with case studies and complex industry approaches. Costing, billing and capacity forecasting in the cloud receives attention as does cloud analytics with some very interesting related projects. The 'Future trends' chapter is one of the most intriguing with forays into IoT, machine learning and more. The 'points to ponder' section here is very interesting - in fact, this 'points to ponder' section appears at the end of each chapter and really provides many pathways to future approaches and opportunities. There is a quick pop-quiz in the later sections of the book that provides a self-evaluation and then a good chapter on a hands-on project for using a cloud service provider (AWS) . There are three comprehensive appendices towards the end, the first provides a detailed take by the authors on the afore-mentioned 'points to ponder' at the end of each of the preceding chapters. I found this appendix ( Appendix A ) very thought-provoking. Appendix B delves into further cloud considerations ( accelerators, fault tolerance and more ) - with a excellent set of references. This also applies to preceding chapters - the reference list is very extensive and thorough and shows excellent research on the part of the authors. Last, the authors offer additional cloud projects which reflect the state-of-art ( eg: AWS has made the Genome Project data available to the public -- how can one search and assemble a particular gene sequence - for example for E-coli ? ) . Other projects discuss online communities and online libraries. In summary, the authors provide one of the most comprehensive overviews and often in-depth discussion to the state of cloud computing with much technical detail, literature references, relevant projects and what-if scenarios. They have done really good work and a service to the cloud computing community.

Chapter 7 is plainly weak: authoring team has to beef up theirsecurity baseline. Plenty of material nothing of which can bebrought back home.
