From Publishers Weekly
What does it mean to bless others and ourselves? In this collection of O'Donohue's poetic prayers, the author of Beauty and Anam Cara focuses on bringing God's blessings into the liminal spaces in our lives: times of transition, grieving, change or preparation for the unknown. Some of the blessings are for specific situations that are bread-and-butter staples of other prayer books, such as benedictions over births, weddings, new jobs or new homes. Others are unexpected and bravely dark, including a prayer for the loved ones left behind after a suicide, or for a parent after the death of a child. O'Donohue is not afraid to tackle the fear and guilt that many harbor secretly, bringing shame and addiction out into the open even while celebrating new life and new love. His writing is sensitive and deep: As light departs to let the earth be one with night, Silence deepens in the mind, and thoughts grow slow; The basket of twilight brims over with colors, he says of evening Vespers. The book closes with the Irish priest's personal—and often profound—musings on the act of blessing, drawing on Celtic spirituality and the wisdom of poets and philosophers. This is the fifth copy I've bought of this book, which is not only a personal favorite, but a favorite gift for friends at times of celebration, sorrow, challenge, or transition in their lives. John O'Donohue's writing is luminous, inspiring and timeless. There is a blessing in this beautiful, small volume for almost any occasion, and it serves as a reminder of how many everyday moments deserve to be honored with reflection and "blessing."
This book is beautiful and inspiring. I bought it for my mom, but after an experience rooted in reading it I had to buy two more copies to give away and kept this one.One day before work it moved me to tears, and I made a sort of despairing extremely uncharacteristic plea to abrahamic capital G God "what am I doing with my life?! How have I neglected my purpose and experience on earth for so long?! ARE YOU THERE GOD? IM LOST SEND ME A SIGN!" This was the first time I sincerely spoke to this particular godhead since early childhood. That night while waiting tables a stranger who's table got up to leave blocked my path and insisted on speaking to me. When I brushed her off She said "God heard you cry out to him today, he says he has a message for you." AND I KID YOU NOT she described aspects of my spiritual practice no person has seen, repeated verbatim my prayer from hours before, mentioned a devastating experience from ten months before I kept private, a dream my mother had the night before I was born...and my divine purpose."I'm not saying you will receive direct verbal answers from God after you buy this book, but I am saying there is something very special in these blessings. Something that alters you, and brings you perhaps just a little bit closer to the omnipresent divine.
I love John O'Donohue, and bought this book because I love Benedictus, and worried that his works were going out of print. I was disappointed to discover this is not a second book of blessings, but a retitled Benedictus. Would not have bought it knowing it was the same content. The content is beautiful, but I like the format and printing of Benedictus better.
I found out about this beautiful book from my yoga teacher, who read one of the blessings aloud to the class in honor of a teacher at the studio who is moving away. I was instantly hooked. This isn't a narrative - instead, this book is almost like Psalms. It features gorgeous blessings for changes, beginnings, new houses, new parents, you name it, it's got it. And when I say they're gorgeous, I mean they are gorgeous. Beautifully written and lyrical, these blessings are something you'll want to bestow on yourself and those you love. I sent a copy to a dear friend who lost her mother unexpectedly, and she loved it.
Knowing what I understand now about John O'Donohue, life, death now changing in form- I would not be anywhere without this book.It goes with me to the seashore. It wanders with me out into the woods. It lays still sometimes in the bathroom where I hope a loved one might pick it up when wondering, when questioning, when painfully realizing that they are beside themselves, disconnected- somewhere between the pages, the spaces- connections are made again.Often, this book is found laying on a little table in my hoop house, where I confer with the chickens and we all agree in a way to go along and take the next breath with a greater appreciation. The chickens cluck as they are apt to do and I find my self thankful and longing for more such simple blessings. With each reading of this book, of every page utilized by my own struggles or by my reaching out to someone who needs simply to be understood, compassionately- I am enriched. Those around me, living and breathing are blessed too by the beauty left upon me with each reading by the eternal echoes found and sounded over and over again.I cannot say I found answers in To Bless the Space Between Us, only understandings. And on every page, John O'Donohue understands lovingly and with great compassion. The book is a blessing. It does help me to understand better, to chip away the covering on what seems like stone, but is eventually reduced to powdery clay.A book of blessings, yes. A book of beauty, far reaching. A book of us, absolutely.
I bought this book because I read a poem on FB that is in this book. This book of poetry contains different poems for all different occasions of our life. The one I initially liked is called "A Blessing for the New Year (Beannacht)" - Mr. O'Donohue is Irish - the book has different sections of poetry: Beginnings; Desires; Thresholds; Homecomings; States of Heart; Callings; and Beyond Endings. I haven't read too many of the other poems at this point. The poem Beannacht touched my soul and I felt I wanted this book.
What a wonderful practice...the read a blessing or two everyday for yourself and for others. I like how he categorizes the blessings for various themes or needs such as good health, grief and loss, etc.
Lyrical, beautiful word pictures provide words for all sorts of human experience. O’Donohue feels experience broadly and deeply and shares it with the world. Be sure to look up him reading a poem on YouTube and hear his fabulous brogue. You’ll hear in your mind how each one ought to be read.
