I expected this to be more history than biography. On that note I was wrong. As a history of the Koran war, it's a miss, as a story of two men from vastly different backgrounds who became friends as naval aviators, it's well done.

This book reminds me of why I read books. This is a well-written and completely engrossing story about friendship and adversity. The book is a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices that previous generations endured for the benefit of those who enjoy our freedoms today. I wouldn't be surprised if this deservingly becomes a hit movie; regardless, if you enjoy amazing history, then give this amazing book a try. This outstanding work comes highly recommended!UPDATE: This is the first time I have ever come back to update a review on book. Why on earth would I do that? Well, the book has stuck with me. I think of it daily; that seems crazy, but that is the case. I think of the sacrifices that these guys in the book made (especially what the Marines went through in those beyond horrible conditions in Korea), and I think of the men and women throughout our military that continue to make sacrifices in many ways that allows the US to still be the best country in the world. There are sections in the book that literally drove me to tears, which is fairly unusual for my personality. A great book really imparts a sense of learning and understanding, and this book accomplished that many times over. I also happen to be a writer (with zero association of the writer of this book or the publisher), but I can honestly state that if you only buy and read ONE book this year, make it this one. It is that good, it is that amazing, and it is that important, at least in my opinion.

My late father, US Navy LTJG William H. Finn, was a 22-year old Naval Aviator who flew F4U Corsairs with VF-871 off the USS Essex (CV-9) in the Korean War. I have always been immensely proud of him for his wartime military service, and this book underscored many of the reasons why. The brave and selfless service of our veterans, especially those who served in combat, was exemplified in this book. Thomas Hudner was not only a brave and incredibly gutsy flyer, he was also a man of deep personal conviction toward his fellow man, despite the color of his skin. I am a voracious reader, and in my 63-year lifetime I have only read less than a dozen books that I truly savored from start to finish. The story in and of itself is unbelievably inspiring, but the manner in which Adam Makos tells it is particularly skillful. To make the experience last, I purposely limited my reading of Devotion to ten pages a day, and I savored its every word. One of the best books I have ever read, period!

As a former Marine who really enjoyed Makos’ Voices of the Pacific book, and A Higher Call- I was very eager to read Devotion for the Marine element it promised to deliver, as well as the full story behind Captain Hudner’s dramatic rescue attempt.This book reads a lot like A Higher Call. It’s written in an immersive style that puts you INTO the story alongside the characters. It’s not a military textbook and Makos comes right out and says it’s written in a way for a greater audience to enjoy, so don’t expect a ton of military jargon.One of the best things about Devotion is that it's more than just an aviation story as the cover suggests. Yes, the story of Tom, Jesse and the Navy pilots is fascinating, yet the story of the ground pounders is equally enthralling. Makos not only follows the pilots, but also a small group of Marines as they practice war in the Med during the summer of 1950, and then go to war in the epic Chosin Reservoir battle.It is this changing perspective from the pilots to the men on the ground that makes this book so much more than just the story of Tom and Jesse.I highly recommend Devotion for every type of reader- to former Marines like myself, all the way to my 30 year old Granddaughter who will be getting a copy for Christmas. We owe it to the men who died in Korea to have their story told and remembered just like those of World War II.

"Devotion" is a true story of heroism and friendship set against the backdrop of the Korean war. The story revolves around two pilots; Lt. Tom Hudner and Ens. Jesse Brown. Tom came from a well-to-do New England family, while Jesse grew up on a farm that his father share-cropped.. Jesse became the Navy's first black carrier pilot, while Tom would become his closest friend.After enlisting, Tom and Jesse were stationed aboard the carrier USS Leyte. Originally sent to the Mediterranean, the pilots would engage in war games and relax on the French Riviera. They even got to meet Elizabeth Taylor. They also met some of the fleet Marines, including "Red" Parkinson. But the sunny skies and carefree days wouldn't last, for the war that no one expected, Korea, broke out in June of 1950. The Leyte immediately steamed for Korean waters.For the next several months, Tom, Jesse, and the other members of fighting 32 flew missions against the North Koreans & Chinese, while Red and the fleet Marines fought in the Chosin Reservoir. One day, during a strafing attack against the enemy, Jesse's plane was hit by ground fire. He was forced to land on an empty space on the top of a hill. Tom, seeing what had happened, had a difficult choice to make; does he watch his friend die, or does he try to save him?"Devotion" is a fine book about the bond between two friends. Tom and Jesse came from opposite ends of the social spectrum, but became fast friends in spite of their cultural differences. Tom Learned of Jesse's deep love for his wife and daughter as well as his strong religious devotion. Set during the racial tensions of the 1950s, Tom accepted Jesse for who he was; a young man like himself far away from home trying to defend his country. Highly recommended.

Even Christopher Columbus who sought honorable relations with Indiginous Peoples ...was betrayed in his efforts and his life by scheming subordinates who were loyal to Spanish interests.It is an interesting historical footnote that even though Admiral Columbus established the only place on Earth where the Inquisition was forbidden to set foot,many in South America blame him for the actions of those who were actually his enemies.This work is unique and carefully documented about a time that is much overlooked.It has also been misquoted on some sites ...on the Internet.

I read this book and was greatly surprised about how the Sephardic jews were able to overcome great oppression in Spain and Portugal to establish a mercantile empire around the world. They were able to overcome the antisemitism of the British and worked with the Dutch to also become privateers. As the book says it took them about 15 years to defeat the the Spanish who burned 100,000 of their kin. All because of a difference of belief. I was able to visit a few of the synagogues in the Caribbean especially in Curacao. It was very impressive. There is also information about the founding of Port Royal, a great pirate town and the search for the legendary gold mine of Columbus. It is interesting to note that the Columbus family who owned Jamaica refused to allow the inquisition to step foot on that island and thus gave safety to the Jews. Read it and learn.

I really enjoyed the book. There is a lot of information in the book about Jews participating in the New World discovery. It really brings to light a part of history that is rarely talked about. While the story of the Conversos is known it's still rather obscure. So many people conversos have only discovered their heritage in the past half century or past century.My only problem with the book is that I got lost sometimes in the information. At times the book served as a Jewish "Who's Who." I lost the over all narrative at different points.There is a part of me however that wants to be an adventurer or treasure hunter. I want to go find Christopher Columbus's gold mine!

I started reading this on a flight to Jamaica to do archival research on the early European history of the island and couldn't put it down. It proved to be fascinating and gave me a new appreciation for the material I was studying, although it might not be as compelling for the casual reader. The title is misleading however. This book is a history of the expulsion of Jews from Spain and Portugal and their subsequent influence on the New World, particularly the financing of commerce and privateering. Many Jewish merchants fled to Holland in particular, stimulating commerce there, and helping Holland become the center of trade in the "Atlantic system." Much of the story centers on Jamaica, which is entirely appropriate as Jewish merchants capitalized pirates out of Port Royal, the center of piracy in the late 17th century. The author was a long-time resident of Jamaica. He was obviously an amateur historian and an ardent Jew, and this book was clearly a labor of love or obsession for him, so it comes across as one-sided and over-reaching. Nonetheless, the role of Jews in the early European history of the Caribbean was clearly greater than is commonly recognized.

Overall, a fascinating chronological history to explain the Jewish diaspora.Not only TO the Caribbean, but FROM the nations persecuting them.Also, the rationale for their being grudgingly accepted for a while as traders.Inclusion in a society seems to work only so long as you are perceived to be needed.But, if not, then watch out.Hitler was only part of a long line of oppressors including the Holy Roman Catholic Church.

While the idea of this coloring book is great, and is exactly why I bought it, the artwork inside is less that desired. All the pages are mostly black, with small and uninteresting pictures to color. I'll still color in it because I have it - but it's definitely mediocre at best compared to the other adult profanity coloring books I own.

I ordered a few of these for Christmas gifts, and this one is probably my favorite. It has hilariously unique sayings that made for lots of belly laughs. You don't need to color the entire page, so it's possible to finish one page in an hour or two. Other books aren't so accommodating. Also, the remainder of the page is black rather than white. This makes it very balanced, classy looking, and ready to display on the fridge.

So funny! I had a great time going through the book & reading each of the pages. I'd never even heard of some of the sayings or words. Each page is black with the wording and/or design in white. A little unusual for a coloring book as most pages are all white, however it works very well with this book since it helps highlight the words and pictures themselves. Mixture of easy & challenging pages. Great value!

Yep, these are fun and hilarious! These are definitely stress relievers as they are the best coloring pages I have. I have many books, but this one is by far my favorite. It is very relaxing to color to begin with and when you can color and laugh so much, it proves to be a stress reliever. I highly recommend these.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t very impressed with this coloring book. The pictures are mostly paisley swirls and lots of solid black backgrounds. Several pages are just a couple of words in block letters and nothing else.The phrases mostly make no sense, “work yeah no!”; “Tea bag handler!” and several words are misspelled. It’s all pretty amateur hour and you can find way better coloring books for the same price.

I love this coloring book!!! It's amazing when used with vibrant markers/colors with the black background. My only (minor) complaint is that the backgrounds to color are a bit repetitive but not enough to prevent me from loving my purchase.

I bought this for a friend undergoing chemotherapy. I figured this would make her treatment more tolerable so she could take her mind off them while coloring. She said it makes her burst out laughing every time she turns the page to see a new phrase. :-) I would definitely purchase this again!

Nothing better than being able to color the words that I would love to utter to my kids after a trying day. Pleasant way to rid myself of some stress while coloring with my kids. They may not know what mommy is coloring, but we all enjoy the quiet quality time together. A big bonus for me is that the backgrounds are black.

I had the pleasure of taking an in-person class with this woman in 2016 and every time I was around her, I cried. It was as if my soul was opening up like a flower to the sun. She's truly an amazing lady and brilliant medium. Her in-person mediumship/psychic readings are the best I've ever witnessed. Excellent, easy to follow recipes!

If you are brand new to a keto diet this book is NOT for you - not because it's advanced but because the recipes are not true to keto principles.The first recipe and first ingredient listed is canola oil which is an absolute no-no for a keto diet! As the other reviewer mentioned neither is low fat sour cream or low fat cream cheese etc. There's a recipe that uses cranberries and another that uses butternut squash neither which I would expect to see in a keto diet book.Having said that, I bought this book for a bargain price and am well informed on keto principles so it is easy for me to switch out any "offending" ingredient listed in the recipes so I'm not going to bother returning the book.If you're just eating low carb this is not a bad cookbook but if you're new to this way of life better look elsewhere.

The recipes are pretty good so far, lots of whole natural foods and simple to follow. Unfortunately I’ve noticed a few things that are not keto. For example... a few recipes call for “margerine or butter” and non stick cooking spray, which do not follow keto principles. And when there is olive oil in the recipe, it calls for only 1 or 2 teaspoons. Also low fat sour cream and low fat Greek yogurt are called for in some. These are all easy to substitute but still makes me overall question the serving macros that are listed for each recipe.

There are ingredients used in this book that are not actually Ketogenic: chickpeas/hummus, cornstarch, peanut/vegetable oil, soy sauce, hoisin sauce. For many, (Greek) yogurt isn’t necessarily disallowed on Keto, but it’s pretty high in carbs.The purpose of keto is to get 70-75% of your calories from fat, and many of the recipes in this book have more carbs than fat. Even net carbs are higher than fat in several recipes.I find the use of non-keto ingredients almost amusing because the beginning of the book has a lists of acceptable and unacceptable items on the ketogenic diet. I find it funny that in the unacceptable ingredients list beans and legumes are listed, but in the acceptable list has soybean oil and tofu... 🤔 Does the author not know that a soybean is a bean/legume? And that any product made from soybeans would also not be ketogenic??I don’t know what diet these recipes are made for, but it’s not Keto...

Ok. So if you are a beginner, this is NOT the book for you. That being said, it is a great book for those of us who have been Keto for a while and know what to watch out for! I substitute olive oil or other keto friendly oil for the canola, full fat products instead of low fat.... etc and the recipes are good! I also appreciate the care that went into the photos. It is a nice book with a few flaws, but if you are not a beginner you can easily adjust! :)

Super basic and not keto completely. I was looking for inspiration something new this is not it. Would not recommend neither for the begginer in keto nor for the person that is used to cook on a daily basis. Its meh! Super disappointed 😞
