I can't finish this. Got 3/4 of the way, but I'm done. What a bunch of hateful characters. If anyone treated me the way Nicole treats Claire, I'd bitch slap her. Way too over-the-top for me. Real people don't behave like this.

I hated this. If I could return it, I would. This should not be the second book. I read what is supposed to be the first book but based on the story all of this has happened prior to the book I just read. I wish I could get my money back.The characters are very mean. They are not likable whatsoever. I have read lots of Susan Mallery and love reading multi-book stores. But this one is a trainwreck.

Simply put, this is a thoroughly delightful story of family, meeting challenges, and falling in love. From start to finish, the reader falls in love with the characters flaws and all and roots for a happily ever after for the main character. Once again, Ms. Gallery does not disappoint.

As long as you aren't too annoyed by the common romance trope of instant overwhelming attraction, this is an enjoyable read, with main characters you can like and respect, and with Susan Mallery's usual sprinkling of witty dialogue. I'm about to read the second book in this series.

Poor Claire torn from her family, namely her twin sister to study and play piano. Blamed by her twin for their mother's death. Told to go away when she goes to help her twin after surgery.

A really enjoyable experience.There were times when this one had me laughing so hard I had tears 😢 in my eyes.I'm going to look for the next book.

How does Susan Mallery do it? At times I was so angry with Nicole and Claire I was ready to throw the book away and within minutes I was in love with them. Such realistic characters WITH a believable storyline it was hard to do anything but read. Can't wait for book 2.

I finished this in one sitting! Great characters, snappy dialogue and a funny realistic happily ever after. Can't wait to start the next in this series.

My Rating - Must ReadLevel - Fairly easy read, moderate lengthSummaryAs the title implies, this is a book about disciplines for men who are trying to live a 'Godly' life. After the introduction Hughes goes into the 17 disciplines he has identified as needed for men. He breaks these into four broad categories -Relationships - which he identifies as the disciplines of purity, marriage, fatherhood, and friendship. He uses the story of David to illustrate the importance of purity. Originally written in 1991 and revised in 2001, there is the noticeable lack of discussion of internet porn. It seems almost funny (naive?) that he would warn about magazines like Playboy, which doesn't even have nudity anymore. The chapters on marriage and fatherhood are about what you'd expect, though I think he does a good job of warning fathers not to be too harsh in punishment; something often quite lacking in the Christian world. He finishes this section with a chapter on friendship. This was a challenging chapter and a topic I think is often overlooked.Soul - mind, devotion, prayer, and worship. Mind, encourages us to watch out mental intake. He points out the statistics of the amount of TV people watch on a daily basis as compared to the relatively small amount spent reading. He isn't opposed to TV, just points out that for the most part, it is there just to kill time, and recommends different things to read instead - Scripture and Christian literature. Devotion, he breaks down into meditation (on the word), confession, and adoration. Prayer and worship are also as you'd expect, worship being specifically about importance of corporate worship.Character - integrity, tongue, work, and perseverance. Being a man of integrity and clean speech are fairly typical, but the work aspect is unique. I found it especially telling that he would put a chapter on the importance of working in the character section of the book, and after reading the chapter and his arguments, one I fully agree with. The chapter on perseverance was also a new idea to me. His general point is that things aren't easy, and it takes time to accomplish things, and often it is hard just to keep going. This chapter is a short, but helpful, call to focus on what God has laid out for you and to continue on the path.Ministry - church, leadership, giving, witness, and ministry. Again, chapters like being involved in church, giving money, and witnessing (evangelism) are typical and as expected. Leadership is another short chapter that bring a different perspective, but something that is important for men especially. We are all called to be leadership in one aspect or another, work, family, the church, etc. He rounds out the section on ministry with a chapter about, well, ministry. By this he means the importance of actually doing something. Be involved, be willing to be uncomfortable, to be challenged, and to fail, if all for the glory of Christ.Finally, there is a short epilogue with a concluding argument for the importance of Godly discipline and the correct response to grace God has given us. The book is then packed with another 50 pages or so of 'resources' including the hilariously dated 'Bible on Audiocassette', which, honestly, I'm surprised made it into the updated version (the word is so old that my spell-checker is telling me I have it spelled incorrectly). There are also Bible reading plans (including M'Cheyne, which I recommend), helpful Proverbs regarding speech, hymns, choruses, and praise Psalms. As a reading nerd, the most interesting resource to me was his reading survey. He asks a number of well known evangelicals questions regarding their favorite books. This in itself is probably worth the price of the book, and I should probably make it it's own post.Last note on the book, the cover clearly states that there is a complete study guide. This is not what you are probably expecting (unless there was a shipping error and I didn't receive some sort of stand alone guide), as there isn't a dedicated 'study guide' section. Instead, at the end of each chapter, are some thoughts and discussion questions.My ThoughtsOverall, I really enjoyed this book. Written very well in general, it especially pastoral in practice and effect. The typical disciplines you see (not a negative, they are always written about because they clearly Biblical and obviously important) written about are handled well, but the strength of this books comes from some of the other chapters that tackles things you don't always see, such as friendship and work.I'd say this is probably the best book on disciplines I've read so far. One major down side is that, obviously, it is mostly geared to men. Some chapters are universal disciplines, but are written about from man's perspective, and some chapters are specifically for men. That being said, if you have a father, a son, a husband, or really just any man, this book is a must read on the disciplines that God expects of you.More at [...]

Our church men's group decided on this book as a study topic this year and as the title suggests, we were all in for a spiritually challenging journey together. I wasn't familiar with the author prior to starting the book and therefore began it in my usual "Berean" way hoping to not come across any misquotes or private interpretations. Thankfully R Kent Hughes' understanding of the Bible's original languages, authorial intent and context and the all important applications were (in my understanding) extremely precise and accurate.The book is arranged into 19 key chapters that cover different aspects of a man's life walk that require focus and discipline if he is to show love for his God and fellow neighbour. I was very encouraged to discover all of the selected life areas were very much contemporary weaknesses in the lives of Christian men the world over and in bad need of attention. From the outset, the author literally pulls no punches as he warns that discipline and character building in these Godly traits would require continual Godly sweat and hard work. Using the imagery of an ancient Greek athlete who is training for their sport, Hughes exhorts the modern day Christian man to strip himself of the baggage that is presently weighing him down (sins) and get to work in his spiritual gym so that all areas of his life grow stronger and bear fruit. I felt that I was one who needed to read this book as I sometimes like to rest between spiritual sets or exercises for too long before moving onto the next one. As a physical fitness trainer, I could relate well to the imagery used as I often would encourage my clients to work hard in the gym sessions and during the week.In addition to covering the disciplines, the author provides some excellent resources as tools to use to assist the necessary life changes.Next to the plain reading and meditation of God's Word (the Bible), I'm hoping that the disciplines gained from reading this excellent book -The Disciplines of a Godly Man, will be a blessing to my God, family, church, friends and the wider community.Really happy to give it a high rating.

Only Christ and what he did on the cross can accomplish that, but once we have entered into that relationship, God EXPECTS us to reflect Christ in all that we do, say, and think, and that those actions come from the INSIDE, reflective of a CHANGED HEART and MIND! This book will challenge, convict, and motivate you to be what we have been called to be in Christ. I highly recommend this book, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND this for the purposes of a men's study/accountability group.

A very comprehensive book into taking a look into the very aspects of living out the gospel! There were plenty references to what the bible speaks on for the various disciplines (i.e. work, worship, etc.) while providing a practical approach for understanding and application. This book was the topic of discussion for a men's fellowship group and each chapter spoke clearly and directly to many of the men each week (one discipline a week). I would recommend this book to anyone who is either new to the faith and requiring more insight into living a disciplined life in the faith or mature Christians seeking rejuvenation and restoration. Frankie Manning spread swing dancing's popularity throughout the world while touring with Whitey's Lindy Hoppers in the 1930s and '40s. In a dance competition, Manning astonished the crowd with the first-ever Lindy aerial, or air step (where the man sends his partner flying). Later Manning toured with jazz greats such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and performed in several films, including Everybody Sings with Judy Garland. After a long hiatus from dancing, he was a consultant for Spike Lee's Malcolm X and coached a new generation of dancers in the swing dance revival of the '80s and '90s. While the first-person accounts of Manning's life capture his vibrancy, humor and charm, the narrative is interrupted by short sections of historical notes; their formality is at odds with Manning's ease and charisma. I'm a swing dancer (lindy hopper) and this book was so helpful and interesting. I didn't know about a lot of the origins of phrases we use now, or realize that certain people knew each other. The writing style is friendly and engaging; I would probably enjoy this book even if I weren't a dancer.

I have been a student and admirer of Frankie Manning's ever since my first dance lesson with him almost ten years ago. Frankie is a legendary dancer, an innovator and pioneer in the dance form called "Lindy Hop" that started in the Jazz Age in the streets of Harlem and continues to this day in clubs, schools and dancehalls all over the world.I've been hearing Frankie tell his inspiring stories for a long time now, but never with this rich detail and the larger historical context provided by Ms. Millman to back them up.From his days as a child at rent parties to the heyday of the Savoy Ballroom to performing internationally with the dance troupe Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, you follow the exciting growth of a young dancer. Then we follow Frankie into the war years and his dropping out of the swing world for several decades. Fortunately in the 1980s, Frankie is coaxed out of retirement and continues to do this day to teach and inspire others about this wonderful dance.Throughout it all, you cannot help but be touched by Frankie's grace, style and humor in navigating tumultuous, often racially-charged situations. I was fortunate to have met Frankie twice before I read the book. This gave me the face and voice to put the words to. As I read, it was as if Frankie was there talking to me with all the wit , humor and charm he has in person. Frankie's excitement in telling his stories makes you wish you could have been there with him. Frankie does a wonderful job of taking you through his life experiences in a way that you just can't put the book down. For me the book is about much more than dancing Lindy Hop. It's about how to live your life which is finding your passion and becoming the best, not to become famous or rich, but because it gives you purpose and that gives others inspiration. Certainly, every Lindy Hopper must read this book. But I think it's a beautiful and important book for people outside of the swing dance community too. Frankie Manning was an unsung hero. He and the other members of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers helped were instrumental in a dance that shaped and influenced our culture and our history.

This is a book every Lindy Swing Dancer should read. If you love Lindy, you should know the history, and most of all, know who Frankie Manning is!!!! I've bought one for each of my dance helpers as gifts of thank you. I got mine the day it was released!

Before this book, I had never heard about Boko Haram and all the terrorist things happening in Nigeria. While not graphic at all, it still gets the point across of what is all going on and will leave you seriously thankful for the freedom we have here in America. a perfect historical fiction to add to your book shelf, though I don't recommend for younger readers and kids.

not due to style but to content. Pieces together from real stories by the kidnapped victims, this work would make for a great book study and should spur anyone who has read it to some sort of action.

This novel was such an emotional read. I wasn't aware that some of the things discussed happened to so many innocent people. I appreciate the fact that these authors chose to help tell this story and I enjoyed the format it was told in. If you haven't picked this book up yet give it a go...such an eye opener.

Based on interviews with survivors that took place in the two years post-kidnapping. is a Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani is a Nigerian writer and journalist. Viviana Mazza is an Italian journalist and this fiction story is all the more heartbreaking when one realizes that every moment of it is based on facts.The book is written in brief one page or less stream of consciousness style scenes, similar to and vignettes or journal entries. The structure, narration of the story by an adolescent girl is very reminiscent of Scholastic's Dear America novels. The style makes it significantly easier to read as the story becomes heavier and more heartwrenching.The first half of it novel details her daily life and worries as a 13-year-old girl, from puberty to nerves regarding the results of her scholarship. The desire and importance placed on education are often similar to Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions. The story discusses pertinent issues in the current equal access on the basis of gender debate, as the main character often struggles with attending school while menstruating, and skips school, even though she is objectively the brightest student in the class. But it also questions the effectiveness of current measures of development aid, as a “pink van” shows up early in the novel and delivers 4 pads to the girls. The pads are too expensive in their area to be an effective means of menstrual care in their area, so the reader is forced to grapple with the effectiveness of handout style programmatic interventions.A short, well written, and timely story that I heavily recommend.

Searing and powerful, this book is beautifully written and impossible to put down, and handles a tough subject well.

I will be reading this again as well as look for more from this Author... Excellent book!!

This is a difficult but very necessary book for those of us who are chronic over shoppers. It isn't a joke, like is often portrayed, and this book treats it like the serious problem it is for many of us in this country. It can have devastating effects when we are unable to rein in our spending. This is an excellent book addressing the real problems. It is so specific about the problem, if you are one, it's tempting to quit reading, because it is describing you in less than acceptable terms, you know it's true, and don't really want to hear it.

The psychology piece is solid and the book started off strong with analyzing your shopping behavior right out of the gate. However there is an irritating amount of commentary on almost every page about dated methods of shopping that nobody in my generation has ever used, or likely ever will. The author spends a lot of time talking about phone ordering from catalogs (what?) and TV shopping channels (is that even still a thing?) and the author seems confused by online shopping. It's very obvious that the book was written 15 years ago.If you're in your 20s/30s and have never heard of phone ordering from a catalog (seriously, what?) you're going to have to sift through a lot of dated, irrelevant nonsense to get to the useful part of the book.

If you have bad shopping habits this book will benefit you so long as you are willing to dedicate yourself to doing all the exercises (which are plentiful). My problem was binge-shopping, where I would go months without buying much until I hit a low-point and spent hundreds of dollars (which I couldn't afford to spend) on make-up, clothes, anything that would help me feel better. This book helped me understand why I was using shopping as a relief mechanism, what was driving me to do it AND find solutions to overcome this problem. I'm glad that I had this resource to fall back on whenever I felt that I would withdraw. Thank you for this well-made book Dr. Benson!

Super interesting and insightful book. I've had a bit of a shopping issue for about 8 yrs now. Luckily it has never gotten super out of control, like opening up credit card after credit card, etc. I'm always able to pay off my debt, but I still need to know that I shouldn't always be shopping like I do. And especially for things that I don't NEED. This book breaks things down and sometimes really makes you look at what you're doing wrong. It doesn't make you feel good, but it's things that you should see.If you need help, get this book.

If you have a shopping problem, like an over the top issue with buying whatever just because you're bored or looking for something to do, this is the book for you. April Benson is a genius at getting at the real issues with shopping. Read the book, then reread it and actually do the activities. You will realize that you don't need to shop to be fulfilled. This is the most effective and helpful book I've read. If you want to shop less and enjoy life more, read this book.

Of the several books on the subject that I reviewed, this one presented the difficult, sensitive topic of excessive shopping in the least threatening, most readable manner. I also liked that the title is non-threatening. I am a retired psychotherapist and was searching for a book that might help a young person whose parents were concerned about her shopping habits.

I bought this to help myself with a bit of a shopping addiction but I got bored of it overall I still quit shopping so much but not because of this book.

Buying something to help you stop buying things is kind of hypocritical but there were a few good things in here. I didn't read the whole thing, I admit,but I did gain a little more awareness in my own behaviors.

I received this book in 2 days. It was in excellent condition. I probably own 30 Cuban cookbooks. This one will be one that i go back to regularly. I have already made the picadillo, masas de puerco, panquecitos and tomorrow will be fricasse de pollo. What drew me to this book were 2 things.First were the photos. I lived in Miami for 26 years. I know these pictures are not from Miami, but they remind me of Miami so much. Also in all my Cuban cookbooks there were no recipes for panquecitos. When i saw this book had one i had to have it. They are delicious little butter flavored pound cakes in a muffin form. I now live in Tennessee and they taste slightly like the corn bread muffins that you get at Famous Dave's restaurant . Furthermore, the first chapter containing recipes for the bakery items has several recipes not included in other books. I highly suggest this book.

I married into a Cuban family and absolutely love the cuisine, but almost none of my in-laws like to cook! Thus, I've spent the last several years collecting a mish-mash of Cuban recipes from a variety of sources. Now, with "The Cuban Table," I finally have a definitive, go-to Cuban cookbook.First things first, this cookbook is gorgeous. The sturdy cover, incredible photos, heavy paper stock, etc., all combine to create a cookbook that looks and feels like it belongs on the shelf of any serious home cook.But that means nothing if the recipes themselves are a bust. Thankfully, that is absolutely not the case here. What you'll find in this collection is essentially a "bible" of Cuban cuisine. Not only does it include just about any classic dish that you would find in any good Cuban restaurant, it also includes a number of lesser-known dishes that I was unfamiliar with. The recipes themselves are easy to follow and often include some good background information or stories to explain the recipes' origins.I've made about a half-dozen of the recipes so far, and they've all turned out fantastic. I've mostly been working my way through the classics--frijoles negros, arroz con pollo, ropa vieja, etc.--and everything so far has received rave reviews. In particular, the frijoles negros recipe turned out the single best batch of black beans I've ever made. Of course, as with any other cookbook, you might find that you want to tweak a recipe here or there to suit your own personal taste. For instance, while the ropa vieja was incredibly tasty just as written, when I make it again, I'll use green cabbage instead of red cabbage (I felt the red cabbage imparted too strong a flavor into the broth) and add a little bit of cumin, as I felt the dish was missing that particular element.Bottom line: If you love cooking Cuban food, this cookbook is a must-have.

I collect cookbooks and have for over 50 years. As a Cuban-American, a full two shelves of my cookbook stash is on Cuban cuisine. I have cookbooks that my mother brought from Cuba; the first booklets that were published by the exile community in the 60's (some of which are just a few pages stapled together). Not to mention binders and binders of recipes published in newspapers and magazines. I mention all this to establish myself as a Cuban cookbook fanatic. (I won't go into what kind of a cook I am, we can skip that part).Now, with my credentials in place, I have to say that, in my entire collection there isn't another book like this one. It is far and away, the BEST I've ever seen in every way that matters:--the recipes are genuine.--they are well-explained and easy to follow.--there is fascinating anecdotal information about them and their history.--traditional, current Cuban, and Cuban-American dishes are included.--It is almost encyclopedic in its scope.--they are presented and grouped logically.--the photography is beautiful.--the book is well-indexed and cross-referenced (not always a given in Latin cookbooks!)--the book (paper weight, quality, cover, layout, design, etc.) is first class.I have to congratulate the author for, not just her efficiency, but also for her sensitivity and her obvious love for her subject. I want to thank her not just on my own behalf but on behalf of my children's generation and other generations to come in both shores. And I have to congratulate myself on having had the sense to buy it the minute I saw it. I imagine that, someday, it will get a place of honor among my cookbooks but, for the time being, I'm just enjoying going on a culinary voyage of memory, imagination and taste.

I never write reviews but I felt this book deserved it. I am not a good cook. It’s no secret. But I love to eat, especially Cuban food. There are no good Cuban restaurants near me so hence my search for a cookbook for Cuban food. Believe me when I say this is the only one I will use from now on. The food is authentic, delicious, and most importantly, the recipes are easy to follow and turns out every time! It’s amazing. Rice has been very intimidating for me but these recipes make it possible for someone like me to make perfect rice every time! I love each and every recipe and the stories and pictures are just icing on the cake. Thank you so much for this book!

I haven't tried every recipe in this beautiful book, but what I have tried is delicious. It's important to read through the ones that interest you ahead of time since they may require marination overnight, or for several hours. But they are worth the effort. Ingredients are fairly easy to find. And, if you're careful, you will be able to duplicate the promised meals. No special chef skills are required. It's a great book for anyone who wants to experience more Cuban flavors.

I just love this book! My husband and brother in law are from Cuba, and we made several recipes from this book already!!! Always comes up amazing! We usually use the list of ingredients but not the amount, so it might be a little different from the book, but it gives you an amazing base to know how to cook what you want.
