If you are setting up a clandestine grow room and plan to spend thousands of dollars, buy this book. If you are a beginner who intends to legally cultivate a few plants outdoors very little of it will be of practical help. Start with something else.I fall in the second category and have been disappointed. Many details I need to know are missing. There is nothing definitive about seed-starting or the best temperature for germination. The mechanics of topping and sexing a plant are absent. Far better information about distinguishing the sex of young plants is available on the internet. The newest LED grow lights were not available when the book was published, so what it says about lighting may or may not still be true.There’s lots of detail and much interesting information. It’s a good reference book but not a good how-to book.

All this book has is the information and everything else needed for anyone to start learning how to grow, trim, nutrient, veg, bloom, and several different ways to grow marijuania in the different available mediums and methods out there to name a couple of things that this books offers up to the individual to is wanting to learn this new skill.This book is amazing and filled with so much information that you will have to read through several times to get what you need or were wanting with more information covering basically anything and everything on the process how to setting up a new garden, growing and taking care of the plants, trimming and nutrienting the plants, how to recognize illness or vitamin deficiency in the plants along with how to fix the issue, and other topics that will cover anything and all you would ever need.This book covers all the information and know-how in order to grow efficiently and effectively in a variety of different growing methods helping you along the path. Get this book and you will not be disappointed.

The information for indoor, outdoor, and hydroponics is mixed and combined throughout. If you want a simple outdoor grow you will be weeding through a lot of useless information. The information you want is there but you need to tease it out. Like some other books this one emphasizes indoor, hydroponic, and large industrial grows. With recreational being legal in several states with more on the way (the Federal level? cross your fingers and VOTE!) people may start moving back outdoors on patios, decks, and proper gardens. I prefer outdoors in containers as I don't have a proper in-ground garden area. My opinion of this book may change over time as I use it for reference. For now this is not good as a step by step guide for growing a few plants. I thought the 1970's Marijuana Growers Guide by Ed Rosenthal and Mel Frank was a good learn-to-grow book which I used back in the early 1980s. Today I have the Cannabis Growers Bible 3rd ed along with the Marijuana Grower's Handbook (the one I'm reviewing here).

Well, if you want to know anything about marijuana you have to have this book!! It is amazing!! And the price for what you get is incredible!!!!! It, my friends, is a real text book about everything you would or could know about marijuana!! Thank you to all of the people who put this book together! You did an amazing job!!!

I originally had the second edition by Ed Rosenthal back in the early 80's. (with great results) This edition goes way beyond that and has great technical and common sense information. I have applied a lot of his techniques to a wide variety of the hot pepper plants I cultivate. I am past the mind bending Sativa and Indica highs of my youth. But the pictures in this book still make my mouth water.

Oh Man... What an Awesome book! I am in the process of growing for the first time and my friend recommended I get this book, so I did. INSANE amounts of information touching on every category you could imagine!. Tells you where to buy quality seeds, how to grow, what the plants need, what they don't need, how to fix plants that are starting to show signs of health decline, the effects of THC in the body and in pets and I could go on forever! Definitely a MUST have for anyone. The book and the pictures are in full color as well.

Just an absolutely great book on the subject! I have no experience in gardening and I picked up this book and finished it cover to cover within a week. Everything is laid out in a manner that is very easy to understand and carries you all the way through the processes of growing. Not only is it a great read, but it is a great reference book as well. It has many charts and full color pictures that really come in handy.

Very useful book, very educational, and the pictures are beautiful and incredibly helpful! I purchased another growers guide but I should have just bought this one to begin with.

This was on the list of resources I was given for people dealing with spiritually abusive churches. I found it helpful.The latest fad in churches is *Membership Covenants* and getting people to sign them, which people are convinced they must do. In fact, these documents exercise inappropriate, authoritarian control over Christians' lives by pastors/elders, are unbiblical, and do not respect individual conscience. They are one of many tools used to abuse the flock. I watched excommunications and shunnings at my former church for the slightest dissent: a godly doctor (married to his wife for 45+) years was excommunicated and 200 people were ordered to never speak to him again because he had disagreed in private with the pastors/elders. It was sickening. Then a lovely married wife/professional woman was subjected to same because she wanted to leave the church and was troubled by its abuses. Then another woman was excommunicated for standing up to protect children from a known sex offender in the church. This book explains so much.

This is the second review I've been able to write because we have downloaded it on so many devices that we had to buy a second kindle version! We have benefited from the explanations of how abusive leaders misuse certain scriptures, how people influence the thoughts and actions of others, and why it is easy to stay under those influences. It is helpful for us to be able to label certain techniques (i.e. mind blocks), realize how they were used on us, and can identify them in action.

This book describes in good detail how spiritual abuse can happen and how some people get out of it.The interesting thing about spiritual abuse as described in the book, is that it doesn't only occur in religiouscults, but can occur almost anywhere religious people meet if the environment is right.I was impressed with the description of how people who abuse others spiritually often change the meaning ofcommon words in order to influence the minds of their subjects. This book will help you if you are confused & hurting!This was one of the first books I read after exiting a controlling bible cult that put into words, the mind games that I knew existed...but wasn't able to put my finger on or verbalize. From the first Chapter "The Discipleship Game" to the last I was mesmerized.The author, Mary Alice Chrnalogar had been a member of a controlling church group, so she really understands because she has experienced spiritual abuse herself.While reading the book, I would insert the word "pastor" for "leaders", doing this just helped me process the information, as the group I escaped had only 1 leader & he was called "pastor".She has check lists at the end of the chapters that really helped me, because I could visually see that "WOW!" at the end of the "Authority Unlimited" chapter, I checked 10 out of 11 that applied to the church/cult that I had been in! It was empowering & validating to see the proof right in front of me. Of course the proof was in my experiences in the abusive group, but her book helped me to honestly SEE & make sense out of what took place.Here's a quote from the book"Chapter 8: Vicious Information Control - Page 139..."...TRICKS TO KEEP YOU CONTROLLEDLeaders get you to believe that they don't interpret the bible, but just "teach what is in the bible" - making the bible synonymous with THEIR interpretation!Leaders teach you to think that, if you want to be truly committed to Jesus, you must believe every word THEY teach about the bible.Leaders prompt you to think that you are probably committing sins of pride or rebelliousness if you don't believe every word of the bible as THEY interpret it for you.....These are some of the ingredients for controlling...."At the end of the book there is an Appendix, called, "A Summary of Abuses" this list was extremely helpful too."Twisted Scriptures" allowed me to see that I was manipulated & yes, I was a victim of an abusive, controlling religious group. It helped me to understand & make sense of what I experienced.While reading her book I had many, many "Wow!" moments.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has family in a controlling group or cultic church. This book would be helpful to anyone who wants to understand the mind manipulations that happen to folks who are in cults. I didn't think I was joining a "cult"...I thought I was joining a "true church". Over time the atmosphere became oppressive & hurtful. I searched to make sense of what I had experienced & this book helped me tremendously! We found ourselves in an abusive ministry structure and found this book to explain everything that was happening and why my heat was so unsettled. A must read for every adult male and female in the days that we are living in. It really lays out what the abusive authorities are doing and how they manipulate. Can be given to directly to someone you love that you feel is in an abusive discipleship, church, or cult.

This book is geared towards people that are not feeling great within their churches but feel the inflicted guilt of leaving such groups either by social pressure, inflicted guilt, brain washing , intimidation, or fears of social rejection or intimidation by such groups. the book was written by someone that had such experiences and she does a good job at getting people to a place of well being without having to adopt all the myths that some churches impose on their groups.

Chrnalogar's volume is addressed to those who might be in an abusive pastoral or ecclesial relationship. Her tone is direct but polite. The references are clear and well annotated. The research is very well documented. For a volume designed to assist people in a troubled relationship, this work also meets high academic standards. A great addition to any pastor's shelf regardless of denomination.Other reviews note that Chrnalogar is a Roman Catholic. It was clear to me that she was from the way she presented some of her thoughts and ideas. Don't let her denominational affiliation stop you from reading her work. This is first-class scholarship.

If you grew up watching those awful awful Yankees teams of the 80s and early 90s, you also know that listening to Scooter, White, and Bobby Murcer was all that made the WPIX broadcasts bearable. Hearing Scooter riff on whatever news story was bothering him that day, or who's birthday it was, or trying to wish Pagliarulo's grounders out of the infield, was awesome.This book openly acknowledges the poetic genius of Phil Rizzuto's impromptu utterances in the booth. Call me sentimental--in this case I don't care. I loved him, and I love the book.

This book was a quick, easy, entertaining read. Full of Rizzuto quotes I found myself laughing at many of his hilarious broadcast comments. I never had the chance to listen to him broadcast but I really felt like I was listening to play by play (and redirects, many of them!) as I read this book. It's not a long book and many of the quotes are a sentence or two...but it's still a great read of a classic broadcaster and former player.

Never in the long history of the poetic art...

I am an old Yankee fan. Phil Rizzuto was one of the great team players and leaders. I expected a lot from this book. Turns out it was only outtakes of small things he said while broadcasting. Most of which made little or no sense. There was nothing in this whole book of interest. This is the only sports book I have read in which I never got anything out of it.

In the late 1970s, when the Mets really hit the skids and the Yankees got good again, it became necessary, if you were a kid in the Tri- Statearea, to at least watch the Yankees, perhaps even to grudgingly root for them. Â Forced into this spiritually untenable position, I chose to onlyroot for the scrubs, which made Cliff Johnson my favorite player. Â I'll never forget the game where he tagged a pitch and Phil Rizzuto startedscreaming that : "That one's outta here", bringing joy to the heart of every Heatchliff fan, only to have his towering popup caught by thesecond baseman. Â "The Scooter" was easy to laugh at, with his myriad phobias, his propensity for saying unintentionally offensive things about minorities, histendency to leave the ballpark early when the Yankees were home, etc. But then there began appearing in The Village Voice a mostremarkable feature : verbatim text from Scooter's broadcasts rendered as poetry. We were suddenly confronted with the frightening prospectthat Scooter was not only making sense, but serving up literature, even profundity. Consider the wisdom, about baseball and about life [....] As it turns out, this kind of exercise even has a name, it's called "found poetry." The Rizzuto poems are as good as any I've seen[...].At any rate, this book is a hoot and once you read it you'll never again think of Rizzuto as just a good glove man, nor listen to a baseballbroadcast without noticing the frequently poetic nature of the announcer's line of patter.GRADE : A

As someone who's been a Prince fan for literally as long as I can remember, I knew I wouldn't be able to resist reading this book. Initially, I did feel a tiny bit of skepticism, for headlines and the Prince fandom alike loved to give the impression that Mayte was being a sell-out, and that she should be ashamed of herself for writing a tell-all book to cash in on the death of a world icon. However, that's not what this book is in the slightest.A pretty big chunk of Mayte's life was spent with Prince, so this is very much her story to tell. She does not pretend to know every detail about Prince's life, she does not pretend to know what precisely was going through his mind during some of the lowest moments of life. She does not use 300+ pages to give away juicy and scandalous secrets about his life. Instead, she gives readers a glimpse into what her life was like growing up as young belly-dancer, and getting swept up into a whirlwind friendship-turned-romance with a real-life Prince charming. Ever a mysterious man, even to those closest to him, Mayte simply sheds some light on the unique view she had of him, first as his "student", then as an employee, then as a wife, and then, as someone who understandably had issues with him but still loved him from afar despite tremendous loss and heartache.Highly recommended for every Prince fan who wants a brief glimpse into the man behind the Icon.

This book was wrote from the heart. The love they shared was beyond compare but the heartache was beyond repair . It takes you on a personal journey from start to finish. 5 stars. A must read.

If you approach this book with an open mind and no preconceived notions you will find an interesting, heartfelt, well-told and hauntingly tragic story.Whatever you may think of her, if anything at all, there is something beautiful and yet heart wrenching of him to be gleaned from her words. The picture she paints of him, rather than a caricature, confirms an incredibly intelligent musical savant and remarkably flawed weirdo who was often emotionally disconnected from others and, at times, just plain unpleasant. But, her glimpse behind the proverbial curtain further reveals a beautifully complex human being with a huge heart, steadfast (or, stubborn) faith in God, and unfortunately, a long-damaged little boy lurking just beneath the surface. She also confirms that each was simultaneously shattered during 1996. The lingering unanswered question is whether/to what extent he reassembled the shards during the two decades of his life that followed. I don't suppose we'll never truly know the answer.Would he be angry with her for publishing this? No doubt. It’s difficult to imagine him being anything short of absolutely livid over having been portrayed in such a fallible manner. Will you nevertheless find him (infuriating warts and all) more endearing as seen through her eyes? Yes. From between the lines fliows the unmistakeable sense that he would've been a very good father and, in turn, being a father would've almost certainly proven very good for him. That's the reason to read this book.

I have never written a review of a product on here before, but this book deserves it. I literally received this book 5 hours ago, and have since finished it already! I could NOT put this book down!! Beautifully written book!

Really good read. If there was a happier ending it would make a great big screen movie. As I was reading it I was really hoping that they could have gotten back together before he died. Mayte really made this a long love letter to him. Even through the imperfect times she was very kind in her story telling. Great read, sad but very Interesting.

This is a beautifully written book by a woman who clearly had a deep and lasting connection to Prince. I thought the book was very respectful towards Prince. There were no salacious details - just a lovely tribute. I admire her courage in writing about the death of their son. I truly wish her a life filled with happiness.

The book arrived as promised. I am from France and the context can be vulgar, but it is accurate. Just remember that it is not for formal and business settings. For those who plan to learn French, I recommend learning from a reputable source for good grammar and this book can alternatively smooth it out....or rough it out, depending on how you look at it. Good resource to make sure you are applying correctly to appropriate places, people, etc. In my opinion, it can be funny and quite direct, but it is French....I recommend!

The only reason I rated this book at 4 stars instead of 5 was that it lacked any pronunciation help. That is my only complaint about the book, it's really that good!The book is arranged into 13 logical groupings of content and each has a quiz of some sort at the end so that you can test your (written/reading) comprehension.I would love to see Genevieve put out a version of this book (as well as Merde Encore!) with an accompanying audio tape and/or CD. I have a fairly good grasp of French pronunciation, but I know that there are some words that I am butchering. Even if the book was just revised to include phonetic spellings of the French words used, that would be a big improvement.

A Wonderful book. I moved to France without being able to speak a word of French, except for the one sentence I'd retained from high school lessons: "une baguette, s'il vous plait" (the boulangerie was the only place I actually had to speak -- in supermarkets, you just pay what's written on the cash register).I soon realized that everything I was being taught at my language course at the Sorbonne was only going to get me so far -- a good 50% of peoples' conversations, the dialog in movies, song lyrics, etc., used words that weren't in my textbook.This book was a godsend -- easily the most useful French language textbook I've ever read. Ultimately, it meant that I could start taking the steps to being an "insider", rather than a tourist (another hint -- knowing 1970s French pop stars is a lot more important than knowing the date of the storming of the Bastille). Trying to learn another language is always painful, so any kind of positive feedback is important, and I found that it was much easier to impress people with a well-chosen slang phrase than with my mastery of sentences designed to get you through passport control (let alone the use of the subjunctive).Bottom line: If you're only going to learn 50 French words, they should be "please", "thank you" and another 48 from this book -- you'll(A) Be able to amuse your hosts, and (B) Know when people are insulting you.And don't worry, the people in passport control speak English just fine...

When I first moved to Paris, I could barely speak a word of French (and had no job, and nowhere to stay, but that's another story), apart from a heavily-accented "une baguette de pain s'il vous plait Madame". And I can honestly say that this book was THE most useful thing I read -- indeed, it's the only book I pored over and learnt sections of by heart. Yes, speaking proper sentences and being polite and all that is all very useful, but if you really want to enjoy yourself, and get on with the locals, then this is the motherlode. Even if you only know two words of French, slipping a few well-chosen words like "bagnole", "boulot", and "flingue" (and the choicer swear words) into your conversation will break the ice, and impress your hosts, a LOT more than knowing the subjective pluperfect ever could. I eventually took "proper" French lessons at the Sorbonne, and had many arguments with my teacher about the relative merits of "correct" and "colloquial" French. For me, learning a language is about communicating, not about grammar, and this is the perfect place to start. To this day, I make sure that none of my friends or colleagues goes off to France for any period of time without a copy of this under their arm...

I've had the paperback versions of these (two) books for years. Now I've got them on my Kindle. Great! I live in France and have found Merde! to be essential when trying to converse with my french friends in a way that they (and me) don't find awkward or embarrassing. This is an invaluable tool for you if you're intending to visit or live in France. Everyday phrases, including swear words, are clearly explained with examples.

Great book. I bought this 20 years ago, lent it to someone and never got it back. Salope!!! Found it again and now it is being pored over for great additions to my French vocabulary (as needed). I'm not lending this one out!!

This is a must if you are going to have much contact with the French and their language. I only wished I had the book in H.S and college. I lived in France during college, and the book would have helped me learn the informal spoken language much more easily. You can never go wrong knowing the slang of the country you are in. It is still up-to-date, because I have shown it to a Frenchman and Belgian teenager, and they both laughed at the contents. Flipper

The book is fun and there are lots of new words that I learned, but there are a few phrases that were not translated and because they are expressions, its very hard to understand what they really mean.

About the Author

M. I. Finley (1912-1986), the son of Nathan Finkelstein and Anna Katzellenbogen, was born in New York City. He graduated from Syracuse University at the age of fifteen and received an MA in public law from Columbia, before turning to the study of ancient history. During the thirties, Finley taught at Columbia and City College and developed an interest in the sociology of the ancient world that was shaped in part by his association with members of the Frankfurt School who were working in exile in America. In 1952, when he was teaching at Rutgers, Finley was summoned before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee and asked whether he had ever been a member of the Communist Party. He refused to answer, invoking the Fifth Amendment; by the end of the year he had been fired from the university by a unanimous vote of its trustees. Unable to find work in the US, Finley moved to England, where he taught for many years at Cambridge, helping to redirect the focus of classical education from a narrow emphasis on philology to a wider concern with culture, economics, and society. He became a British subject in 1962 and was knighted in 1979. Among Finley’s best-known works are The Ancient Economy, Ancient Slavery and Modern Ideology, and The World of Odysseus.Bernard Knox (1914–2010) was an English classicist. He was the first director of Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC. Among his many books are The Heroic Temper, The Oldest Dead White European Males, and Backing into the Future: The Classical Tradition and Its Renewal. He is the editor of The Norton Book of Classical Literature and wrote the introductions and notes for Robert Fagles’s translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey.

I am reading this book while re-reading the works of Homer and it is extremely helpful. This book provides lots of information and insights on social relationships, customs, economy in ancient Greece. It is helping me better understand literature that I love and the world in which its heroes moved and interacted with each other. Great reading! You can tell that the author has an immense knowledge of the era, but is able to convey it in a light, easy-to-access way. I would suggest this book to anyone interested in ancient Greek culture.

I read this, of course, in conjunction with The Iliad and The Odyssey. As you would expect from the title, this book is a great introduction for anyone who wants to learn more about the world that Homer lived in. Its easy readability makes it a pleasure to read, and it definitely enhances your understanding of The Iliad and The Odyssey.

Originally published in 1954, revised in 1978, this little book is both interesting and pretty damned thorough. Knox's introduction is, like all his work, first class. If "The Odyssey" for you is more than some cool stories, you should read this book.

Reading Finley immediately after you finish Homer allows you to revisit the epics' individual passages and tie them into coherent themes. Finley's discussion of the Greek household, or oikos, is especially good, as are his insights on giftgiving. The world that Homer sang of is a stark contrast to the more familiar, Classical Greece, and yet the seeds of that Greece (and hence our world) are already recognizably there. Perhaps they are there in a truer, less alloyed form.The only regrettable part of this book is the second appendix, a speech that Finley later gave on Schliemann. It is full of such professional bitterness that one begins to doubt Finley's decency. The publisher produced a gem of a book, but it should seriously consider removing these few pages in future editions.

Finley only briefly ventures into archaeology in the beginning of _The World of Odysseus_, and only to demonstrate that Mycenean Greece is not the world of the Homeric heroes. From this conclusion he guesses that Homer is likely describing a world that existed between the Mycenean era and the poet's own time.Finley then goes literary, eschewing anthropology and archaeology and instead analyzing the texts of the Iliad and the Odyssey. From the stories of Homer, he reconstructs the sort of society in the Homeric heroes lived, in terms of its economy, its social structure, and its morals and values.The picture he draws is interesting and compelling, above all because it is consistent. Its consistency is, of course, an argument in favor of the view that the Homeric world really did exist (i.e., that gods and magic and specific names aside, the cultural world described by Homer is authentic, and not an artistic creation). Moreover, because the culture is consistent, an understanding of it helps a reader to interpret sometimes puzzling actions on the part of Homer's heroes. This is therefore important secondary reading to accompany any reading of Homer.

The World of Odysseus by M.I. Finley is considered a classic about Bronze Age Greece, and it is. And with an introduction by Bernard Knox is always interesting. Prof. Finley is very such of his evaluations about the Greek Bronze Age and definately so about Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and who might have written it. I am sure that camp about the Greeks and Homer are divided between those who agree and those who don't. I find much in his argument to agree with.

Very good book to read in conjunction with your next read of the Iliad and Odyssey.
