About the Author

V. S. Ramachandran, M.D., Ph.D., is professor and director of the Center for Brain and Cognition, University of California, San Diego, and is adjunct professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, California. One of the world's foremost brain researchers, he has received many scientific honors, including a gold medal from the Australian National University and a fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford. He gave the "Decade of the Brain" lecture at the Silver Jubilee meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, and his work has been featured in major media. He lives with his family in Del Mar, California. Sandra Blakeslee is an award-winning science writer for The New York Times. For the last ten years, her reporting specialty has been neuroscience. I am a recent amputee, who like so many other amputees has had the strange experience of a "phantom" leg--ie: a feeling that there is still a leg and a foot where the leg and foot were pre-amputation. I saw an article by a well-known doctor who recommended the book "Phantoms in the Brain" by Dr. V.S. Ramachandran to help explain some of the mysteries of this phenomenon. I have not finished reading the book as yet, but what I have read is very interesting. If you have interest in this phenomenon, I believe this is a worthwhile book to own.

Q How do you eat an elephant?A One bite at a time.Q How do you explain a system that is complex, convoluted and adaptive.A Test small bites of stimulus and reaction to confirm or contradict your hypothesis.Ramachandran and Blakeslee created this delightful book using humor, logic and simple tests to illuminate how the brain works and doesn't work. Readers are even invited to run their own test at home to confirm Rama's (his term) conclusions.Why does an amputee deny her left arm is missing or her paralyzed arm belongs to her brother?Such examples offer fertile areas to explore to find what specific brain cells seem related to such behavior.Could we alter the perception of a missing arm using mirrors? The answer is "yes" and by doing so we learn a little more about our brain's adaptivity.So what's going on when a person can square a fifteen digit number as fast as he can say the answer?While these small bites offer small answers, many such bites shed light on big answers.While I want to learn more about the brain, I suspect whatever book I select will be way too technical so I will just reread PITB again.It's that good.

Like Oliver Sacks, Ramachandran tells of some startling neurological insights he's gained by examining unusual cases. These pages contain summary case histories of individuals who can't recognize faces - of individuals who deny that various body parts belong to them - of individuals who experience vivid hallucinations.Many of Ramachandran's breakthrough theories though are based on his treatment of individuals who suffered from phantom pain after an amputation. In the course of probing this puzzling phenomenon, Ramachandran hit upon some ideas that have far-reaching implications. Studying this phenomenon allowed him to advance new theories about the way stimuli are received and mapped in the brain.When a leg is amputated, the area of the brain that would normally register sense impressions from it is left without any incoming stimuli. That part of the brain sits expectant and hungry for some incoming messages. Neural connections in adjacent areas of the brain then sometimes expand, filling in the information vacuum. Those adjacent areas are ordinarily dedicated to registering sensation from unrelated parts of the body, such as the face. So when anyone touches the amputee's face, that sensation might be amplified and experienced as severe pain in a leg that is no longer there.Ramachandran believes that this tendency of the brain to adapt and "fill-in" might be at the root of many neural dysfunctions. When a person loses his sight in a part of his visual field, surrounding neurons might elaborate and reach in to fill the void. When a person loses some aspect of neuronal processing that has to do with body image, other neurons from areas of adjacent functioning might reach in to offer sensation input. The borrowed processing mechanism doesn't always fit its functioning into a "normal," coherent sense of the world though. The result can be strange distortions of perception.These ideas might explain all sorts of human folly - such as fetishes. Specifically, Ramachandran suggests that foot fetishes might arise because the sensation processing areas devoted to the feet and to the genitals typically lie adjacent to each other in the brain. Similarly, various kinds of body dysmorphic disorders, such as anorexia, might be traced to such take-overs.This book was written in 1998. Ramachandran suggested many experiments that could be made to test his theories. I wonder how many have been done in the interim? I'm eager to check out any of his more recent writings to get updates on some of these questions.He writes in an accessible style. What's more, he suggests a number of very simple, non-invasive techniques that people might experiment with to relieve themselves or family members of dangerous delusions. For example, he suggests spritzing cold water into the left ear of anorexics; he suggests using mirrors to help "neglect" patients recover an awareness of both sides of their body and of their environment.The 35 pages of small-print footnotes at the end of the book might appear to be a chore that you'd be inclined to skip. I did not expect these to be covered in the book but since the author ventured out of what I did expect and towards this field, it would have been good to see something mentioned to this effect.

About the Author

Craig Duncan is an active Nashville musician fluid in both country and classical styles. He began his study of the violin when he was eight and went on to garner a Bachelor of Music degree from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Craig's performance experience includes the Grand Ole Opry, the Porter Wagoner Show, and TV specials with various country and bluegrass artists. Craig has been the featured instrumentalist on over fifty record albums, with sales in excess of three million. He is a member of the National Fiddler's Hall of Fame and Who's Who in Music and Musicians and is recognized internationally for his numerous books and arrangements of fiddle music published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc. He has produced numerous recordings for the gift shop market in a variety of musical styles. As a hammered dulcimer player, he is known for his work on Green Hill's Country Mountain series as well as Brentwood Music's Smoky Mountain series. He is active in the Nashville music industry as an instrumentalist, contractor, producer and arranger. In addition to his performance activities, he is also Adjunct Professor of Fiddle at the Belmont School of Music in Nashville, Tennessee. He is actively involved in carrying on the tradition of American fiddling and is engaged in research, writing, and teaching in this field.

Whether you’re using the workbook for the physical worksheets, or adapting the ideas to an individual or group exercise, the possibilities feel endless.There are a lot of structured, rigid social skills group curriculums out there, and while they’re great, this book gives you the flexibility of fostering a teachable moment on the spot, without the need of following a week by week curriculum. When a specific problem presents itself, such as personal boundaries or making friends, this book has ideas and exercises to support approaching and working through the problem. I’m super grateful, as not many real, on their level books like this exist for kids. Filling a void I felt was there!

Natasha does a great job of making this book fun for both parents and children to read! Each chapter talks about a certain topic such as listening to others. She gives children activities to do with others and also examples of situations that could occur where the child has to choose what the right action would be. She does a good job of addressing problems that occur when social skills need to be worked on and offers practical solutions. At the end of each chapter, she summarizes with "you cracked the code." I like this because it reminds the reader what was gone over in that chapter and it also gives the person a sense of accomplishment. Fun book!

This offers 50 fun ways to help your kids (or their friends, or at your daycare, etc.) learn and understand social ‘rules’. It’s not just about having manners, it’s about learning to LISTEN, make friends and how to talk to others. There are ‘worksheets’ that can be filled out in the book or copied in you are working with more than one child. I liked the activities that allowed for creativity and interpretation. This book is great! Well designed visually with good illustrations and easy to use activities. The progression of skills made sense and built on each other. Examples were appropriate for each concept. A younger child could use the book with an adult, while an older child could do much of it independently.Now if only grown ups had all of these skills mastered!

I first read this in my 20's. I'm now 76. I don't believe I've read any other novel that has overlaid religion as successfully on reality as does this. I ponder its message given the current state of politics in America.

"A Case of Conscience" by James Blish is an interesting science ficton novel which has held up fairly well. Originally written in the 1950s, the story involves a mission to another planet, Lithia, where a race of intelligent beings exist. These beings are rational, logical, and welcoming. They are physically somewhat like a bipedal reptile with a pouch. The plot follows (mainly) the journey of a Catholic Priest/scientist Ruiz-Sanchez. I read the book the first time in the late 1970s and then again jsut recently.Positives: The alien's society is well crafted, Good dialogue. Interesting characters. Somewhat of an unexpected climax.Negatives: for a protestant person, I was unfamiliar with the heirarachy of the Roman Catholic Church. Catholic readers may be better able to relate to some of the ecclesiastical orders and such better than I did. Nonetheless, the novel is an interesting read.I did find the passages when the team come back to Earth, (trying to avoid spoliers here) less compelling than the interactions on the foreign planet.My grade, a nice B novel. Worth the time and effort, but as I said, a Catholic reader will probably appreciate it more and have a better background for this novel.

Every five or ten years, I find this book in my library, and find something new and different each time, though I must admit I'm fond of the killer bumblebees on the sun porch.This is a Hugo Award Winner from back in the day that every science fiction fan should have already read. James Blish's A Case of Conscience is a 1950's award winning sci-fi classic. A small team of Earth scientist (including a priest) are charged with assessing an alien planet that possesses intelligent life. While there is some disagreement on their overall conclusions, with the physicist wanting to use the world for weapon's research, the biologist / priest surprises everyone wanting to ban all contact. His conclusion is based on a civilization that has developed a morally and ethically perfect society without having any religion and thus must be the work of Satan. As a parting gift, the aliens offer an egg that grows into an alien on Earth and proceeds to whip up much dissension.The main sci-fi focus is on alien life with a distinctive, "unhuman" lifestyle. Furthermore, the iron poor nature of the alien planet creates a scenario where civilization has flourished, but remains technologically limited. Growing social inequality on Earth, nurture by a ubiquitous, consumer driven media fuels dangerous societal tensions to their braking point. Finally, Blish presents an early perspective on alien life from an organized religion's viewpoint which clashes with traditional beliefs. Lastly, the juxtaposition of an exorcism and nuclear weapons research offers a stark image of an evil Satan to be banished.

Blish is of course remembered as one of the premier science fiction writers of the last century. I quite enjoyed Cities in Flight, but this novel presented too many problems for me. Mainly, Fr. Ramon's theological quandary left me cold. In fact I dismissed it entirely as a phantom of an overheated imagination. However, the tale is told very well, and the "case of conscience" it presents may appeal to other readers.

I happened to read this shortly after reading a collection of Stanley Weinbaum stories. Weinbaum was known for creating aliens with alien perceptions of life. This made Weinbaum's stories mildly philosophical, in an adolescent way. The perspective of Blish's aliens is more mature and fully developed. This alien civilization is interpreted from the viewpoint of a Catholic priest, who believes literally in the story of Eden and the Fall of Man. I don't happen to believe that, nor did Blish. At least I'm pretty sure he did not. The future Earth society Blish imagines is quite gloomy, and rather dated, since that future society already arose before 2017. But it's quite believable. This is science fiction, rather than science fantasy, and it's about as good as science fiction ever gets.

James Blish was one of the sci-fi masters who did not deal with God and religion by ignoring them. Instead, he addressed them directly in several stories and novels. A CASE OF CONSCIENCE is one of those novels. Featuring a main character who is both a scientist and a priest, the novel postulates a planet which may be a trap for humanity. At one point in the novel, Satan is referenced as the "second greatest power in the universe." If you have an interest in sci-fi and in theology, you may find this book fascinating. I did.

A Case of Conscience is a fine novel written around a concept delivered through a an evocative story. The elements of the story that were cast forward in time are well contrived, especially when considering the publication was released over a half century ago. Mr. Blish pulled out all the stops in his use of documented incidences in the development of religious culture on Earth. The book seems like it was the one the author wanted to write.

If you have a C4 there is very little for you here. The author's wife has a C5 and almost all of the articles are for the C5. This book is a waste of money for C4 owners.

I was looking for performance improvement week end projects, not what I expected. However, if you find even one thing in this book that you can do, it's paid for itself 10 times over. As you know, you can't do anything to this car at a shop for less than $100. So even though it wasn't exactly what I was looking for, paid for itself.

Not if you have basic skills, I returned it

I just bought this book having recently purchased a new C6 Corvette. The projects listed appear to more focused on the C5 but there are projects that cover the other models or generic items that cover all models. Some of the projects are pretty basic such as replacing the console cover which requires removing 4 screws. Other projects are more complex and this book will help, but mostly with the C5. It does contain good information and I will be referring to it in the future.As a side note (not related to this book), if you have a C6 with the dual mode exhaust option (NPP), you got to get the Mild2Wild exhaust controller. You plug it into the spot where the exhaust fuse goes and you can open and close your exhaust with the push of a button, at any RPM. This is a 3 minute install. You got to get this thing!

You can find all these projects on the internet and most of them you could find with video. Bought this thinking it would give me good ideas but they are not inspirational.

I am mechanically inclined but would not classify my self as a mechanic (maybe a decent parts changer) and I am also a visual kind of guy. This book is great. It's projects are illustrated in such a way that the average enthusiast can relate to and not feel intimidated. Pictures and instructions are clear and concise. Get this book and get busy!!

Good book, slight English bias, but the writer is English go figure. It is a a short history just as the title tells you. Good book nice pics. could use a bit less about himself, but good over all.

Fluff and many inaccuracies.

My review was much, much longer but Amazon refused to publish it for some reason. So here is a short review instead!If you are one of the million who commute by public transportation, this is the perfect carry along. The pictures are particularly beautiful and his narrative of the short history of the motorcycle is both engaging and entertaining. He clearly has great affection for James May as he insults him every now and then (a general means by which the male of our species, homo sapiens, proclaims affection, if not love or respect or both, for the same sex) making you feel as though you are watching a classic episode of Top Gear, but only better because this time it's about motorcycles. Whilst I think that Hammond could have developed certain topics further, inevitably the book is a coffee table book written out of a genuine love for motorcycles and not some desire to educate the world vis a vis a doctoral program at a distinguished British university. If it were, I'd be signing up for my PhD today! No, Richard Hammond's love of motorcycles is infectious and genuine. He didn't write this book to make money, he doesn't need too. He is rich. Rather, it's clear that the book is a giant love letter to the motorcycle as a whole itself including how it has shaped his own life and the lives of millions of other bikers in all their forms, be they part of the 99%'r or even 1%'r crowds. Thus, whilst the title of the book is not technically misleading, a more suitable title would have been something along the lines of Richard Hammond's Love of Motorcycles or better yet Ode To Motorcycles: A Love Letter By Richard Hammond. Either way, it's a fun little read that will leave you wanting to find out more about various aspects of motorcycle history, marques and generally anything to do with two wheels. There's nothing more to say other than "that'll do Hamster, that'll do.
