I knew I'd see a bunch of five-star reviews for this book. It's predictable that Wilco fans would run out, buy it, and lavish praise it. But there's not a lot of reason for Tweedy to have written this book right now. He's (hopefully) only halfway through his career. And while he's experienced some tough times, they don't fully amount to the completion of a life arc that would justify such a grand statement.Yes, Tweedy is humble, heartfelt, and self-effacing in what he's written. But it's not a very interesting read. And most of the anecdotes aren't vibrant or deep-- they don't fully transport us into the room, the moment. Sure, we get the emotional vibe. But he generally takes the 30,000-foot approach.In contrast, open to a page of Keith Richards' book and you'll see what engrossing is. The eye for small details, the type of sheets on the mattress, the stucco on the walls, the exchanges of dialogue...Tweedy understandably accepted a book deal, and I hope he makes some money. (He has a family to support, which may be the justification for the book.)But overall, this reads like the lengthy extrapolations of insights gleaned from several years of therapy.Where he failed is in writing a book that holds little interest or relevance for someone who isn't a Wilco fan, or doesn't know their music. If you're just a music fan, or an average book reader, this memoir will be...boring.And that's a bummer, because Tweedy is a talented guy.I'l give it three stars for the solid writing skills. But save your money unless you're a Wilco diehard.Sorry to say...

I'm a huge Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt/Wilco fan but I wasn't really anticipating this book in any way until I read an excerpt somewhere online and I enjoyed it so I bought the book.This is not a chronological record of Tweedy's life (though it's roughly chronological), I'd say it's more a collection of thoughts on his life, himself, songwriting, music, relationships, etc. I find his writing style very entertaining - he's not trying to impress us, he's not trying to sugarcoat anything, himself included.You get some good (and sad) stories from his childhood and how music became incredibly important to him. He doesn't go into detail about every album, every song, every tour, or anything like that. The focus drifts among different topics, but not in a bad way at all. He doesn't grind an ax with Jay Farrar - he portrays them both as dysfunctional introverts who connected through music until Jay walked away (completely). I don't find that I need to take sides with either one of them - there is no bad guy.He touches on the sad, tragic figure of Jay Bennett, giving him effusive praise for his musicianship and the collaborative connection they formed early - but also talks about some of the dysfunction in that relationship, as well as addiction issues, that led to them no longer being able to work together anymore.What I really related to was his connection with music growing up. I'm roughly the same age and music (records, concerts, playing/writing/performing) essentially "saved" me in a similar way. He comes across as a relatively normal, likable guy who maybe isn't great with people. Well, who really isn't great with people. He presents himself in an honest, earnest way. He's not trying to convince us of anything, he's not trying to win the Jeff vs. Jay debate, he's not portraying himself as some kind of tortured genius, he's not worried if we'll like him.But I do like him. This book is funny, sad, poignant, inspiring, insightful and fun to read. I've would've been happy if it was twice as long. I connected with many things in here on a personal level. Your experience may be different. I've already started reading it again.

I've just finished this book in a really quick read. Anyone who cares about music, rock n roll will love this honest memoir about the struggles of being a musician, drug addict, and anxiety issues. Tweedy is honest and sincere in all of it. I started the audiobook (read by Tweedy himself) and you can hear the emotion in his voice so don't forget to listen to that too.

Although I am a big fan of Jeff Tweedy’s music, I didn’t expect too much from this book just because I’ve frequently been disappointed by musician’s memoirs. So it is a pleasant surprise that this book is so good.This is a very honest, warts and all, story of his life thus far. A lot of good, juicy tidbits for Wilco fans. It is also surprisingly very funny in parts. I laughed out loud several times (his imagined response to “How about those Cubs?” Is classic.) Jeff Tweedy is a thoughtful, smart guy and this book proves it.

Even though I probably look like some of the people Wade Rouse makes fun of – I don’t have an extensive budget for clothing and I buy my shoes at Payless – I identify with him. I love the outdoors, but if I’m out in the sun too long, my skin turns bright red, I start running a fever and I have to go to bed for a day or two. I love country life, but I want to be able to go to the theater and find people I can talk books with. While Wade – or should I call him Thoreau, in honor of the Walden writer, or Lucy, as in “I Love …” has different reactions to country life, somehow I think our souls were cut from the same bolt of cloth. (Although, somehow, his turned out to be silk while mine is cotton.)The book is so funny that I almost fell off my indoor exercise bike – six or seven times in an hour. My family kept coming in to check on me to make sure I was all right. From his adventures with a raccoon to his shopping spree at a gardening store, many of us who live in rural areas can identify with him. (In my case, the raccoons pooped on the roof and destroyed the tiles and I bought a rhododendron bush because I loved its leaves, even though it never ever throughout eternity has grown in dry New Mexico, according to all the critics on my Facebook page.)There’s a heartbreaking yet hilarious chapter on his childhood stay at a Christian camp where all the cool kids spoke in tongues. And there is beautiful, tender, loving homages to a grandmother who read to him on an Ozark porch from “Walden” and “The Bible,” her two favorite books. While Wade shares memories of bullies who honed in on him because he was gay, there is ample evidence that his grandmother’s lessons from her two beloved books armed him with what he needed to be himself.An obsession with Erma Bombeck, the 1960s humorous family newspaper column icon, may have influenced Wade’s wit; I think she would have been proud of his next-generation of “humor at home” writing. The book is rather elegant, in its own way, written beautifully and truthfully. There doesn’t seem to be much of that exaggeration that makes some humorous essays break up like a duck egg placed in a dishwasher. (You’ll have to read the book.)And the reader can only hope that Wade and Gary are living happily ever after; the loving portrait of his partner leaves you pulling for them. Gary is one charming human being. In the end, you’ll probably feel as I do, that you want to live next door to them.

This book popped up on one of my daily book suggestion lists and it looked fun-- I like occasional humor to lift me from the depression That settles over me after reading one of my historical fiction novels about, say, the outcome of the lives of Henry VIII. Well this book was light years from that and I loved laughing and laughing and laughing! I have known so many fun -and yes, adorable, gay men like Wade and Gary in my life and after a recent move to Portland OR, I thought I would easily find another band of wonderful gay men to hang out with. Anyway I have yet to find my new tribe in my new city (although I have met a number of lovely lesbians, for what it's worth). Wade's descriptions in this book are so funny and so typical of small town life in rural America. His caring of Gary really shines through as does his love of animals , especially his dear dog Marge, whom he treats the way I treat my golden retriever, Timber. This is a fun-to-read memoir! The premise of a St. Louis professional and writer and his partner uprooting their lives to move to rural Michigan certainly provides a lot of comedic fodder. Rouse balances the hilarity (and frivolity) with his use of Thoreau's Walden as a guide to adapting to country living and embracing a new lifestyle. Through the Walden frame, Rouse touches on bigger issues like relationships, religion, pet ownership, following your dreams - but still manages to include detailed descriptions of each of his fashion choices.There are several laugh-out-loud sections here (my favorite involving a rousing game of Candyland). Rouse's tone feels both lively and intimate. It's easy to imagine sitting across from him at a fancy coffeehouse and hearing him relate his stories in the same exact manner. Similar to many other modern essayists, Rouse's writing is reminiscent of David Sedaris. But with more fashion sense and a sort of sparkling flair. Luckily, he lacks the angry and bitter undertones of Augsten Burroughs which makes this a lovely and entertaining read.The Walden theme really centralizes this memoir. Unfortunately there are a few repetitive turns-of-phrase that work against it. The repetition makes this a less fluid read and more of a collection of essays than a completely cohesive memoir. I am definitely intrigued by Rouse's skill with words, though, and I definitely plan on checking out his other books.

After a trip to New Orleans, I searched in vain for a book about the architecture of the city, which was just gorgeous. Nothing was available in the gift shops and souvenir shops, surprisingly. So I came home and bought this one from Amazon. It's a bit dated, but it has pretty much what I was looking for: beautiful photos and explanations of the history and style of this unique city. Maybe the shops should pick this one up as an item to sell.My interest was exterior architecture, which this book has, but it also includes interiors and a whole section on Mardi Gras. I would have preferred more on the exterior, but I am glad to have bought this one as a "souvenir" of my stay.

What can I say? Any book even MENtioning my great former Galveston-era friend Joel Dyer and his Victorian design savvy is of great interest to me. And I was thrilled to see another antique framed poster of a New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe's tableau (parade float illustrations) like the one I found folded up in a Galveston junk shop in the early '80s. I'm proud that newspaper insert hangs in my dining room. If only my l'il darling pooch, kd, hadn't chosen to chew a good part of the book's cover! I believe the book's out of print (or is it?).

As a former resident of New Orleans I have many books on the city.This is one of my favorite so far as photographs of New Orleans, inside and out.Beautiful photography, brilliant colour and great subject matter make this book a must have for those who love New Orleans.This book is also a great gift for anyone. I never tire of looking at it! It has a history of the city in the foremost part of the book that adds to it's attraction.Just a great book!Annalisa

This is a beautiful, thoughtfully done book that transported me back to New Orleans, where I love to visit and have never had the good luck to live. It's a soulful place full of creative approaches to living and this book is a tribute to that.

This rating is not for the book but for the disappointment of not getting what I thought I ordered, and an attempt to keep others from the same disappointment.I read some of the reviews, clicked on the "look inside" and then bought this book. I thought I would get the book I looked at when I "looked inside". NO. That is not what you get. When you click on "look inside" you get to see the hardcover 2003 version. It appears to be written by a different person than the paperback 1990's version you will get if you buy this one, though the photographer is the same. Though I haven't looked deeply yet, some of the pictures appear to be different between the two, and as noted the writer appears to be different. There is a small disclaimer at the top of "look inside" that tells you you won't get the book you are looking at when you order, but I didn't notice it until now, as I am trying to figure out why I didn't get the book I thought I was getting. So, be sure to be aware which book you are ordering and don't be fooled by the "look inside" option. If you want the hardcover, be sure that is what you are ordering, or you will end up with a paperback that is about ten years older than the hard cover. Also note they are both pre Katrina. I gave it four stars because I didn't want to drag down the books overall rating when I'm not reviewing the book itself, just trying to clarify what you will get if you order and wanted to warn people who don't read all the fine print, like myself.

This is more than a guide book about an interesting city. She gives a lot of information on where to find things that you never even knew you were interested in, since reading it I've ordered five different books mentioned, from STORYVILLE to Scott Joplin to the history of mansions on St Charles Avenue. It's a wonderful book

There is no place as special as New Orleans on earth and this book does total justice to it. I was fortunate enough to live in New Orleans for 8 months while my fiancé was temporarily sent there by the Corporate office. For those who have never been, you must see it. It is so full of life, and music and history. I have no other word for it then magical, as if you have found a way to go back in time. From the excellent food (which is not all creole) but anything you could imagine or want, to the rich history of the French Quarter and the Garden District, to the ruins of the old plantations. I could not have loved it all more, nor missed it more deeply. Now, with this book, it all comes back as if I am still there. It is a beautiful book, suitable for any coffee table. Gorgeous color photographs. I have many books, on many subjects, but this one..by far...is my absolute favorite. One day I hope I can return to New Orleans for good, until then I have this very special book.

Lovely book. Bought to compliment an earlier book on the old River Road plantations. Great to have on a rainy day....
