A Book Review of "Win Bigly" by Scott Adams (creator of the comic strip "Dilbert").A friend who is also an avid reader recommended this book saying, “I think you will find it interesting.” But unfortunately, I found it distressing.The author states: “My main point of this book is that humans do not see reality as it exists.” And to that I say, Adams proves his humanity with this hypothetical book. Thankfully, he says many times that this book is more entertainment than science, and he shows it by quoting one source (a friend) twenty-four times and few if any others.The only logical explanation is an affiliate deal. It’s hard to miss the irony of his repeated claims to be a great persuader (he repeatedly boasts he is one of the main reasons Trump was elected) since neither his book nor his only source are even close to the top 10,000 in Amazon sales.This book felt like one big multi-level marketing presentation for the persuasion skills of the author. It soon became evident why he loves and supported Trump most of the campaign—because they are much alike.I am hard-pressed to determine an audience for this book other than the Trump base. And I suppose they would benefit from the rare joy of finding Adam’s opinions agree with their worldview. He states, “My audience on Periscope unanimously agreed that they heard it (that facts don’t matter when picking a President) from me first.”The writing style of the author came across as disingenuous and laced with false humility, albeit engaging. Again, he writes almost exclusively in personal opinions.This book seems to elevate the art of persuasion above all else, including facts and justifying narcissism. He states that sometimes “art needs an enemy” and if this book could be called art, then yes, I am now an enemy.One of my “persuasion” heroes is Michel Montaigne and the contrast this book draws to his classic essays are stark indeed.A couple of sentences contextually sum it up for me. He calls Trump’s reason for pulling out of the Paris Climate accord “one of the greatest High-Ground Maneuvers in modern history,” and then goes on to posit that “he caused it.”He also opines the “Scott-caused-it” persuasion filter where he considers whether he simply predicted or actually caused Trump’s “unexpected” election victory (in some small way) with his own persuasion. This sentence seems the height of arrogance unless you read the book and then it is par for the course.This book is indeed a proof text “that humans do not see reality as it exists.”

One of the best features of the book is that Adams gives you little marketing lessons in side notes that apply to the chapter they are in. Adams is a trained hypnotist, and gives us convincing arguments as to how that allows him insights into human nature that most don't see. One of the most interesting parts of the book.Did you know that in the Dilbert cartoon strip, Dilbert has no last name? The city is never given. dilbert's boss has no name. Adams explains why in the book. And it's fascinating.Whatever you think of Donald Trump, this is a convincing (and entertaining) book about the marketing principles and strategies Trump used to gather a growing loyal base, and eliminate the competition.These were not political strategies. These are marketing strategies. Trump may not know much about politics, but he sure knew a lot about marketing. And he was going up against several contender that were far more qualified, far better liked, but knew nothing about marketing.When Trump branded Jeb Bush as "Low energy Jeb"...it branded Mister Bush, and the brand stuck. Trump used a combination of branding of people in his way, short powerful slogans ("Build the wall!"), Promises that hit many voterswhere they lived.And Trump sucked all the attention in the race out of the room. Every news show was talking about Donald Trump, and almost nobody else.This book outlines how Donald Trump did it, what marketing principles and strategies were used, and the results.Adams makes it clear that just because he may admire the marketing savvy of Donald Trump, he isn't a huge supporter.This isn't a book about Trump's policies, his goals, his direction for the country. This is a book that studies how Trumpwon the election, and why.Adams also spends some time explaining why Trump's techniques worked on the public, and why we are susceptible to such manipulation in marketing and advertising..This is the only book I've seen that covers the marketing methods used to win a political election. The book is unique, as far as I know. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I'm a salesman and marketer myself. My hardback copy is full of notes inthe margins. If you are in politics, this is a book you study.One point that isn't in the book. Most of the techniques Adams shows in the book are those of a Master Persuader. But you could replace the word "Persuader" with "Con Man" and these techniques would still fit. It's just something I noticed.I think you will be stunned by how clear Scott Adams thinking is, no matter what your political persuasion.One slight criticism. Adams gives Trump himself credit for the marketing techniques used in the campaign. But for other Master Persuader candidates (like Bill Clinton, Ron Reagan, Barack Obama) he says the techniques were from the candidate or someone behind the scenes. After reading all Tony Schwartz had to say about Trump (Schwartz actually wrote Art Of The Deal), I suspect that another marketer was behind the scenes with Trump.

I like a book that makes you question how you think, this one has me feeling like I just fell down the rabbit hole. it’s great. It has me questioning everything I feel like I have a solid rational opinion on and is helping me understand why it is that people who I think are reasonable in other instances can believe in things that I think are so obviously wrong. I am not a trump fan but I do find him interesting, who couldn’t? Using Trump as a case study for how persuasion can work is a genius move. I can see how some are put off by the Trump adoration in this book but I think they are missing the point. It’s not about how awesome trump is, (although there is some of that too) it’s about the power of persuasion and it’s about understanding what motivates and effects people. It goes without saying that very few people will agree with everything in this book, but the author is interesting, thoughtful, and he presents techniques that are simple enough you can test out in real life to see if they are effective or not.I bought the audible version and I love that the author reads it himself. 5 stars not because I agree with everything in this book, but because it has been a mind bending experience.

Simply superb.

Gregg has written an excellent book. This book, in it essence, is a very lucid scholarly, accurate historical-conceptual study of the causal correlations between the commercial society and what Gregg calls its "foundations", meaning the conditions that favor the commercial society. These include moral foundations (e.g., creativity, practical wisdom, trust, civility), economic foundations and legal-political foundations. But to read this book merely as a descriptive study is to miss the more important prescriptive thesis, which is that we ought to encourage and promote the commercial society. Beware, again of missing the important prescriptive thesis if one reads in Gregg merely the suggestion that an appropriate culture supporting these foundations( which intellectuals have a role to shape) needs to be defended and encouraged *in order to* have a commercial society. Rather the equally interesting, if not more interesting proposal, is that one might promote the commercial society *in order to* promote those desirable moral, economic and legal political foundations, which have themselves independent value, and which constitute a culture of civility. So what turned out originally to be means for the sake of the end (i.e., the commercial society) are now proposed as the ends worth seeking via the establishment of the commercial society. Gregg does not harbour pie-in-the-sky illusions: there remains many fine-tuning to be done, and he is alert to these, as seen in his careful qualifications. But this strategy for promoting the culture of civility, if I may, by way of the commercial society needs to be explored, since the causal correlative connections are much in evidence. In inviting us to think this way, Gregg is offering us an example of what Herbert Simon (Nobel Prize in economics, 1978) calls goaless designing (The Sciences of the Artificial, 1983), which he recommends as a fully rational and creative way of designing and engineering society. One seeks a solution (A) for a certain problem (B), but along the way, one discovers that the solution (B) itself is a desirable end, and one can reasonably pursue that (B) instead as the end of the design. Social planning, which aims to improve society, can certainly develop in this way, and the social planner or designer has to be alert, like an entrepreneur, to possibilities, consequences and hence opportunities that result from his solution, and to consider if the solution and the consequences might not itself be worth seeking, and not merely valuable instrumentally. If it is independently valuable, then it might in fact be sought after as the end goal, and what formerly was the end may now be sought instrumentally for the sake of the new end goal, to the extent that there is evidence that they mutually support each other. Gregg's The Commercial Society is just one such kind of design solution for improving the society. Thus it constantly invites us not merely to consider defending the foundations and civil cultures for the sake of the commercial society, but rather that we might consider crafting and engineering the commercial society for the sake of such a civil culture. It is, in short, a book grounded firmly in various strands of the Western tradition, especially that synthesized in the Scottish Enlightenment, but prefigured by a number of late-medieval and early-modern thinkers, such as Thomas Aquinas. It is refreshing to read a text that is so unambiguously committed to authentic human liberty, but which cannot be boxed so easily in any one intellectual paradigm.Those inclined to planned economies or socialism will find this book very challenging to their core beliefs. "The Commercial Society", however, does not seek to persuade by hectoring. Nor does it suggest that commercial order contains all the answers to humanity's questions and problems. Rather, it expresses its arguments through logic, by carefully marshaling the facts, and judiciously surveying history. The book closes with a sophisticated discussion of the possibility of building commercial orders as opposed to simply letting them evolve. It is one of the most intriguing discussions I have read of a problem that has puzzled thinkers such as Smith, Montesquieu and Tocqueville - this alone makes the book worth reading.

As a student affiliate to American Psychological Association (APA), and certified in the basic skills of APA Style, I felt let down in my purchase of this book. It carries great information, but it is not available on all forms of Kindle access. I never know when I may be in need of pulling up information from this book, and my Kindle is not always right in front of me. Tutoring others, but unable to pull up my 'purchased' book on their laptop in order to review rules and guides is a hindrance, causing me to seek other resources beyond APA.

Newbie undergrads or post grads doing quantitative research NEED this book. I found it extremely useful. Would like to see more content focusing on presenting data for logistic regression techniques, but overall, this saved me much pain and suffering.

One of the challenges with a book of this caliber is where to start...wow. Really esoteric, and became a source for investigation into many other areas and philosophies after reading. One of the benchmarks for a excellent book is how it starts investigations into realities and information that you didn't even know existed. I'm a better person for having had consumed.

Haraway, as usual, writes an incredible book that dismantles much of the workings of subjective, patriarchal biological traditions and perspectives. Am very much looking forward to her upcoming book.

In some parts, groundbreaking. In others, a bit longwinded and roaming. But that's Haraway's work in general. She'll blow your mind and make you sigh in boredom in turns.

I want to apologize for this review, because it is less a review of Haraway's exceptionally important book than it is a few sentences on the question of why someone should review a book on Amazon and why one should perhaps not. If you feel that you can competently say a few things about a book that will help a prospective reader know what they are getting into. You don't review a collection of essays by the philosopher Donald Davidson and give them two stars, because those essays possess a centrality in the fields of the philosophy of language and philosophy of mind and philosophy of action that persists even if you think it the most disagreeable book ever written. You may find Jacques Lacan's ECRITS dense and unreadable (and many do, though, hint: read the seminars first; while the essays in ECRITS contain the same content condensed to the point of unintelligibility, the same themes lace the seminars in more accessible fashion). You may give Donna Haraway's collection of essays one or two stars, but all that does is make you look silly. It isn't quite a certification of idiocy, but it is a bit like soiling yourself in public.Donna Haraway's essays on women in science, on the status of science, on women's studies, and, perhaps most of all, her essays on Cyborgs do not simply exist within their fields. One of my fields of specialization is Cyborg Studies. If I were to produce an essay on the significance of Cyborgs in today's society - and I believe the Cyborg is perhaps the most important key to understanding the world into which humans now exist - it would look absolutely nothing like Haraway's. I am writing such an essay, and when it is published, I pray it gets one-one thousandth of the attention that Professor Haraway's essay on Cyborgs has gotten. But here is the main difference between my prospective essay and hers (apart fro the fact that mine is analytic and critical rather than programmatic - my reasons for wanting to write about Cyborgs is different from Haraway's reasons): mine would be a study within Cyborg Studies. Dr. Haraway's essay more or less created and largely constitutes the field of Cyborg Studies. Or put it this way. One sometimes hears the expression, "You can do philosophy with Kant or against Kant, but either way you must do philosophy through Kant." The same holds true with Donna Haraway on any of a number of subjects. If you want to talk or write about academic writing about Gender and Science, then you must encounter Donna Haraway. She is inescapable. And the same is true about Cyborg Studies.You do not rate a book by Donna Haraway like you would a Stephen King novel. You will never surpass her to the point where you will reach a point where you can dismiss her with a one or two star review. Even if you adore Donna Haraway's work, you will probably never enjoy her writing. She is needlessly obscure like most academic writers. Not everyone who writes on intellectual matters is a bad writer. Haraway is not as appalling as Homi Bhoba or Judith Butler (two atrociously awful writers), but worse than almost anyone else. But here is the thing: most bad writers aren't worth taking the time to understand; Haraway is. Why academic writing is so persistently bad is a matter not sufficiently discussed, but primarily people write badly because everyone else in their field writes badly. Most will make excuses saying that they have to write this way because the issues are so complex that they require a break from everyday language. That seems to carry weight when you are talking about, say, Wittgenstein, whose ideas really did represent a break with the common place. But a number of ultra heavyweight writers are marvelously clear writers. The philosopher J. L. Austin is one such writer, and by insisting on writing in everyday language, he stripped away the false sheen of depth that some writers acquire by writing so obliquely that people assume that they are deep. If you restate Derrida in everyday language, he becomes horrendously trite. Ditto Heidegger (though his neologism do allow a sort of shorthand for ideas that would have required a lot of commonplace words). Schopenhauer and David Hume wrote about enormously complex ideas. Anyway, this is a pet peeve of mine and as much as I respect and admire Haraway as a thinker, that is how little I think of her as a prose writer. A lot of this comes, I believe, from a disdain of everyday individuals. Immanuel Kant wrote in that hideous prose of his because Wolff and Thomasius employed the same kind of style, and they established the role models of German philosophers. So Fichte imitates Kant and so on through today. I love that historians generally don't feel the need to write badly, but there are a host of great role models within history. The first person who can generally be considered a modern historian is Gibbon, whose prose is frequently gorgeous. The same is true of Macaulay and a host of others. Some, like Simon Schama, are absolutely brilliant prose writers. For a example of someone who writes beautifully within the field of literary theory, look at Christian Thorne's THE DIALECTIC OF COUNTER-ENLIGHTENMENT. There are numerous passages in that work that are not only clear, but hysterically funny. How can you resist a book with a chapter that begins with the words, "There are two things you can count on a[n early modern] Hobbesean not to like: they are European civilization and space aliens; and we will have understood something important about Hobbes's political thought if we can figure out what the one has to do with the other." Or read in any book by the British literary critic John Carey.There are also bits that are hard to understand because she assumes that you and she shared a common set off issues, that you have read many of the same people and have a similar understanding of the surrounding academic controversies. She does not do the common reader any favors here. She assumes you are already a part of the club. She targets her essays at scholars within her fields and individuals who aspire to be scholars within the field. This bothers me, since I think the world is best serves by people targeting their writings at intelligent people in general (I am thinking of writers like Jane Jacobs and C. Wright Mills and Robert Darnton). I believe in a democracy of idea and while I don't blame people who write obscurely for the rise of Neoliberalism, I do think that they haven't helped matters by making their fields too obscure for the general reader. I don't recommend anyone read Haraway. She has chosen her target audience and I think that really only those in that audience are going to find reading her rewarding. I don't recommend her, but then, I don't recommend Heidegger or Julia Kristeva to nonspecialists.But Haraway's ideas are important. She may be needlessly convoluted in books like WHEN SPECIES MEET and THE COMPANION SPECIES MANIFESTO (both of which should and could have been general interest books), but the ideas are worth unpacking from all of the crud encasing them. I think the people giving this book one or two stars are confusing ideas with the way they are expressed. She is needlessly difficult, but that doesn't mean that she isn't also a brilliant thinker. Haraway is worth rereading, which is not something you can say about everyone. When I was first embarking on my study of Cyborgs, I made it a habit to read her Cyborg Manifesto at least once a week. Sometimes I would read through the whole thing carefully, a part of a sentence at a time; sometimes I would just read through the whole thing quickly. I've outlined the essay, made notes on the essay, and copied down important bits on 3x5 notecards. I have probably read that one essay 50 times. And I'll read it again.So find your own reason for reading Haraway. But please, if you are forced to read her because other people have their own reasons for wanting you to read her, don't do her and yourself a disservice by giving her books less than five stars. Low reviews say nothing about the worth of her books and just makes such reviewers look silly.

Donna Haraway's work in this collection continues to amaze me. Her intense critical engagement with the history of science is resolutely brilliant: she takes common conceptions of the body, objectivity, power, and 'nature' and pulls the rug of patriarchal metaphysics out from under them. These essays are concerned with unravelling origins myths, pointing out the pitfalls of political innocence, deconstructing our conceptions of the natural and the artefactual--you know, the usual. Her project is immense, but the she hones her points in each essay very well with dazzlingly astute political analyses and characteristic poetic phrases. If you're interested in oppositional antiracist feminist consciousness, Haraway's yr philosopher.

The writings in this book have influenced a lot of sci-fi stories. You can trace its theories on post-humanism through many much older literary sources. You can examine books such as: Frankenstein, Paradise Lost and Do androids dream of electric sheep? If you have no interest in studying interesting concepts of post-humanism and feminism or don't have much knowledge of either then this may not be for you. Post-human and feminist concepts are discussed in great length and detail. If you don't know the link between the two--it basically talks about an eventual kind of equality that transcends conventionally defined identity.If you still don't know what I'm talking about then I guess you either have to read more or just stop and turn around shamefully, just let it be. Oh and don't make bad reviews of books because you lack the knowledge or understanding required.One of the most interesting pieces in the book is Donna Harraway's Cyborg Manifesto. It continues to influence many writers, directors and scholars to come.
