As someone who's been a Prince fan for literally as long as I can remember, I knew I wouldn't be able to resist reading this book. Initially, I did feel a tiny bit of skepticism, for headlines and the Prince fandom alike loved to give the impression that Mayte was being a sell-out, and that she should be ashamed of herself for writing a tell-all book to cash in on the death of a world icon. However, that's not what this book is in the slightest.A pretty big chunk of Mayte's life was spent with Prince, so this is very much her story to tell. She does not pretend to know every detail about Prince's life, she does not pretend to know what precisely was going through his mind during some of the lowest moments of life. She does not use 300+ pages to give away juicy and scandalous secrets about his life. Instead, she gives readers a glimpse into what her life was like growing up as young belly-dancer, and getting swept up into a whirlwind friendship-turned-romance with a real-life Prince charming. Ever a mysterious man, even to those closest to him, Mayte simply sheds some light on the unique view she had of him, first as his "student", then as an employee, then as a wife, and then, as someone who understandably had issues with him but still loved him from afar despite tremendous loss and heartache.Highly recommended for every Prince fan who wants a brief glimpse into the man behind the Icon.

This book was wrote from the heart. The love they shared was beyond compare but the heartache was beyond repair . It takes you on a personal journey from start to finish. 5 stars. A must read.

If you approach this book with an open mind and no preconceived notions you will find an interesting, heartfelt, well-told and hauntingly tragic story.Whatever you may think of her, if anything at all, there is something beautiful and yet heart wrenching of him to be gleaned from her words. The picture she paints of him, rather than a caricature, confirms an incredibly intelligent musical savant and remarkably flawed weirdo who was often emotionally disconnected from others and, at times, just plain unpleasant. But, her glimpse behind the proverbial curtain further reveals a beautifully complex human being with a huge heart, steadfast (or, stubborn) faith in God, and unfortunately, a long-damaged little boy lurking just beneath the surface. She also confirms that each was simultaneously shattered during 1996. The lingering unanswered question is whether/to what extent he reassembled the shards during the two decades of his life that followed. I don't suppose we'll never truly know the answer.Would he be angry with her for publishing this? No doubt. It’s difficult to imagine him being anything short of absolutely livid over having been portrayed in such a fallible manner. Will you nevertheless find him (infuriating warts and all) more endearing as seen through her eyes? Yes. From between the lines fliows the unmistakeable sense that he would've been a very good father and, in turn, being a father would've almost certainly proven very good for him. That's the reason to read this book.

I have never written a review of a product on here before, but this book deserves it. I literally received this book 5 hours ago, and have since finished it already! I could NOT put this book down!! Beautifully written book!

Really good read. If there was a happier ending it would make a great big screen movie. As I was reading it I was really hoping that they could have gotten back together before he died. Mayte really made this a long love letter to him. Even through the imperfect times she was very kind in her story telling. Great read, sad but very Interesting.

This is a beautifully written book by a woman who clearly had a deep and lasting connection to Prince. I thought the book was very respectful towards Prince. There were no salacious details - just a lovely tribute. I admire her courage in writing about the death of their son. I truly wish her a life filled with happiness.

The book arrived as promised. I am from France and the context can be vulgar, but it is accurate. Just remember that it is not for formal and business settings. For those who plan to learn French, I recommend learning from a reputable source for good grammar and this book can alternatively smooth it out....or rough it out, depending on how you look at it. Good resource to make sure you are applying correctly to appropriate places, people, etc. In my opinion, it can be funny and quite direct, but it is French....I recommend!

The only reason I rated this book at 4 stars instead of 5 was that it lacked any pronunciation help. That is my only complaint about the book, it's really that good!The book is arranged into 13 logical groupings of content and each has a quiz of some sort at the end so that you can test your (written/reading) comprehension.I would love to see Genevieve put out a version of this book (as well as Merde Encore!) with an accompanying audio tape and/or CD. I have a fairly good grasp of French pronunciation, but I know that there are some words that I am butchering. Even if the book was just revised to include phonetic spellings of the French words used, that would be a big improvement.

A Wonderful book. I moved to France without being able to speak a word of French, except for the one sentence I'd retained from high school lessons: "une baguette, s'il vous plait" (the boulangerie was the only place I actually had to speak -- in supermarkets, you just pay what's written on the cash register).I soon realized that everything I was being taught at my language course at the Sorbonne was only going to get me so far -- a good 50% of peoples' conversations, the dialog in movies, song lyrics, etc., used words that weren't in my textbook.This book was a godsend -- easily the most useful French language textbook I've ever read. Ultimately, it meant that I could start taking the steps to being an "insider", rather than a tourist (another hint -- knowing 1970s French pop stars is a lot more important than knowing the date of the storming of the Bastille). Trying to learn another language is always painful, so any kind of positive feedback is important, and I found that it was much easier to impress people with a well-chosen slang phrase than with my mastery of sentences designed to get you through passport control (let alone the use of the subjunctive).Bottom line: If you're only going to learn 50 French words, they should be "please", "thank you" and another 48 from this book -- you'll(A) Be able to amuse your hosts, and (B) Know when people are insulting you.And don't worry, the people in passport control speak English just fine...

When I first moved to Paris, I could barely speak a word of French (and had no job, and nowhere to stay, but that's another story), apart from a heavily-accented "une baguette de pain s'il vous plait Madame". And I can honestly say that this book was THE most useful thing I read -- indeed, it's the only book I pored over and learnt sections of by heart. Yes, speaking proper sentences and being polite and all that is all very useful, but if you really want to enjoy yourself, and get on with the locals, then this is the motherlode. Even if you only know two words of French, slipping a few well-chosen words like "bagnole", "boulot", and "flingue" (and the choicer swear words) into your conversation will break the ice, and impress your hosts, a LOT more than knowing the subjective pluperfect ever could. I eventually took "proper" French lessons at the Sorbonne, and had many arguments with my teacher about the relative merits of "correct" and "colloquial" French. For me, learning a language is about communicating, not about grammar, and this is the perfect place to start. To this day, I make sure that none of my friends or colleagues goes off to France for any period of time without a copy of this under their arm...

I've had the paperback versions of these (two) books for years. Now I've got them on my Kindle. Great! I live in France and have found Merde! to be essential when trying to converse with my french friends in a way that they (and me) don't find awkward or embarrassing. This is an invaluable tool for you if you're intending to visit or live in France. Everyday phrases, including swear words, are clearly explained with examples.

Great book. I bought this 20 years ago, lent it to someone and never got it back. Salope!!! Found it again and now it is being pored over for great additions to my French vocabulary (as needed). I'm not lending this one out!!

This is a must if you are going to have much contact with the French and their language. I only wished I had the book in H.S and college. I lived in France during college, and the book would have helped me learn the informal spoken language much more easily. You can never go wrong knowing the slang of the country you are in. It is still up-to-date, because I have shown it to a Frenchman and Belgian teenager, and they both laughed at the contents. Flipper

The book is fun and there are lots of new words that I learned, but there are a few phrases that were not translated and because they are expressions, its very hard to understand what they really mean.

About the Author

M. I. Finley (1912-1986), the son of Nathan Finkelstein and Anna Katzellenbogen, was born in New York City. He graduated from Syracuse University at the age of fifteen and received an MA in public law from Columbia, before turning to the study of ancient history. During the thirties, Finley taught at Columbia and City College and developed an interest in the sociology of the ancient world that was shaped in part by his association with members of the Frankfurt School who were working in exile in America. In 1952, when he was teaching at Rutgers, Finley was summoned before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee and asked whether he had ever been a member of the Communist Party. He refused to answer, invoking the Fifth Amendment; by the end of the year he had been fired from the university by a unanimous vote of its trustees. Unable to find work in the US, Finley moved to England, where he taught for many years at Cambridge, helping to redirect the focus of classical education from a narrow emphasis on philology to a wider concern with culture, economics, and society. He became a British subject in 1962 and was knighted in 1979. Among Finley’s best-known works are The Ancient Economy, Ancient Slavery and Modern Ideology, and The World of Odysseus.Bernard Knox (1914–2010) was an English classicist. He was the first director of Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC. Among his many books are The Heroic Temper, The Oldest Dead White European Males, and Backing into the Future: The Classical Tradition and Its Renewal. He is the editor of The Norton Book of Classical Literature and wrote the introductions and notes for Robert Fagles’s translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey.

I am reading this book while re-reading the works of Homer and it is extremely helpful. This book provides lots of information and insights on social relationships, customs, economy in ancient Greece. It is helping me better understand literature that I love and the world in which its heroes moved and interacted with each other. Great reading! You can tell that the author has an immense knowledge of the era, but is able to convey it in a light, easy-to-access way. I would suggest this book to anyone interested in ancient Greek culture.

I read this, of course, in conjunction with The Iliad and The Odyssey. As you would expect from the title, this book is a great introduction for anyone who wants to learn more about the world that Homer lived in. Its easy readability makes it a pleasure to read, and it definitely enhances your understanding of The Iliad and The Odyssey.

Originally published in 1954, revised in 1978, this little book is both interesting and pretty damned thorough. Knox's introduction is, like all his work, first class. If "The Odyssey" for you is more than some cool stories, you should read this book.

Reading Finley immediately after you finish Homer allows you to revisit the epics' individual passages and tie them into coherent themes. Finley's discussion of the Greek household, or oikos, is especially good, as are his insights on giftgiving. The world that Homer sang of is a stark contrast to the more familiar, Classical Greece, and yet the seeds of that Greece (and hence our world) are already recognizably there. Perhaps they are there in a truer, less alloyed form.The only regrettable part of this book is the second appendix, a speech that Finley later gave on Schliemann. It is full of such professional bitterness that one begins to doubt Finley's decency. The publisher produced a gem of a book, but it should seriously consider removing these few pages in future editions.

Finley only briefly ventures into archaeology in the beginning of _The World of Odysseus_, and only to demonstrate that Mycenean Greece is not the world of the Homeric heroes. From this conclusion he guesses that Homer is likely describing a world that existed between the Mycenean era and the poet's own time.Finley then goes literary, eschewing anthropology and archaeology and instead analyzing the texts of the Iliad and the Odyssey. From the stories of Homer, he reconstructs the sort of society in the Homeric heroes lived, in terms of its economy, its social structure, and its morals and values.The picture he draws is interesting and compelling, above all because it is consistent. Its consistency is, of course, an argument in favor of the view that the Homeric world really did exist (i.e., that gods and magic and specific names aside, the cultural world described by Homer is authentic, and not an artistic creation). Moreover, because the culture is consistent, an understanding of it helps a reader to interpret sometimes puzzling actions on the part of Homer's heroes. This is therefore important secondary reading to accompany any reading of Homer.

The World of Odysseus by M.I. Finley is considered a classic about Bronze Age Greece, and it is. And with an introduction by Bernard Knox is always interesting. Prof. Finley is very such of his evaluations about the Greek Bronze Age and definately so about Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and who might have written it. I am sure that camp about the Greeks and Homer are divided between those who agree and those who don't. I find much in his argument to agree with.

Very good book to read in conjunction with your next read of the Iliad and Odyssey.

I have benefitted from my 1991 edition of Halleys for all these years. Age required larger print. In reviewing customer comments I concluded in error that the large print edition would also include the color pictures and maps. It doesn't. I suggest your description of the large print edition state that pics are still black and white pics & maps. Full disclosure is always better. I would probably have bought the large print edition anyway but I am disappointed that it isn't in color too. My misinterpretation of the customer comments on other updated editions. Please help us old folks out with full disclaimers where they exist.

This is a great reference for anyone interested in learning more about the Bible. Pictures are very helpful. I had to chuckle a bit, if this is the large print, I'm sure I would not be able to read the regular (small) print edition. Do yourself a favor and get the large print edition.

This book is a must have for anyone that teaches Bible, or simply wants to know what they are reading!!! I bought it in large print for my husband's uncle. He can't put it down! I have the regular print version myself. Both are exceptional! I do NOT like feel good Christian books and most Bible study books because I feel that mankind's opinion is expressed too freely and that the writer puts too much of their own opinions into those books. This book does not do that. While there are spiritual remarks occasionally, they are spot on with what the Bible is actually saying. The way this book is laid out is pretty much chapter by chapter...you read your Bible, then this book summarizes each chapter. There is an intro to each Bible book that gives the date it was written, the author, and what is going on at the time. It reads a lot like history at times. There are also other sections to this handbook that give history of the Western Church, the period between the testaments, etc. Buy this book!!!! You won't regret it!!!!

Halley's Is Great...But Be Careful! I have a 1971 small handbook that is just great, and with my eyes needing help these days, decided to get the large print addition. Thought it would be a word for word update with large print. Very glad I got it, but doing a comparison, the later version is NOT just like my 1971 version!! There have been really great new additions like new pictures, graphs, etc. but the text is very different!!! I am still glad I got the large print version, but I am holding onto my older copy as well, as I very much like what Halley had to say in the older version. Not sure who updated the large print version, but since Halley died in the mid sixties, I am pretty sure he had nothing to do with this version. It is still a nice work and is helpful in Bible Study.

Not the same as the original Halley's Bible Handbook. This version has been adapted to a pre-millenial point of view. Henry H. Halley would not have approved. Quite a disappointment when you are just looking for a larger print version of the originals.

Really nice and easy to read

I had an older version of this book. This time I got the large print and it has so much more. The one thing I didn't appreciate was the introduction has a very inappropriate statement concerning nonbelievers that needs to be eliminated.

Just what I was looking for. Easy to read and makes understanding bible passages that much easier!

Lots of of historical pictures and maps (some maps are hand-drawn) with relevant captions along with a lot of informative narrative.I just got back from a trip to Alaska and took the White Pass Railroad train trip from Skagway to Carcross. When I returned home, I ordered this book and two other Chilkoot Trail books based on that venture. This is easily the best of the three. I now wish that I had purchased and read it before making the trip.

While the content was exactly as expected, the format was difficult to read. It interspersed too many graphics with text, sometimes alternating pages. As a result, thoughts became literally disjointed. The graphics were good, the text was good, but combining them in this form made it challenging for me.

Good book....recipient likes it.

Just started using this journal after being in a bit of a funk at the start of this year. I researched many different journals but this was the only one that i felt was simple, that didn't make too many 'demands' on my time, that was straightforward, in short, exactly what I was looking for. It's a simple concept and I've only being doing it for a week but I find myself looking for things to be thankful for, find myself adding lines below the three provided and writing in the margins...all because I want to...

This is just what I was looking for. Cute design, motivational and inspirational quotes without being religion or bible-focused, short and sweet places to write. I could have used a regular notebook or journal but I did not want one like that. I want to jot stuff down without writing a lot. For people complaining about the repetitiveness: get some creativity flowing! Use stickers and washi to customize the pages to your liking! There’s a lot of potential here and the price can’t be beat.

It's really cute and had inspirational quotes for each day. The journal entry is writing down three things that you are thankful for each day. There are a few thought provoking entries: write about one person that you are truly grateful for knowing, write about one experience that you are grateful for that shaped who you are today, write about one place that you are thankful that you had the opportunity to visit and why, write about some of the ways that you can show your gratitude to others, and reflect on how journaling three things that you are thankful for a day has changed your life.

I love this book. Just looking at it makes me feel good lol! I have been filling it out daily since I received it. It puts me in a positive mood every morning.

I've been using my 'Good Days Start with Gratitude' journal for just over 6 months. I love the easy, 3 bullet-point practice. It has helped to pinpoint the good in my day without been stressful (not an avid writer to keep a free-form journal or diary). Love the quotes, and enjoy looking back at all the positive things happening on the day-to-day. Would highly recommend!

I’ve struggled with depression almost all my life and sometimes it’s hard to get out of the negative thoughts in your mind and look at the positives. Doing this everyday gives me a different perspective on life and lifts my mood.

I’m a huge journal fan and have many but this journal is so amazing and one of my faves! I keep it by my desk at work and in my purse and constant pull it out when I’m inspired to share moments of gratitude! This is such an important exercise - I wish more people understood how amazing it feels to show gratitude especially in moments when we need to feel inspired! Thank you so much for making this journal - it is one of my favorites!

Basically its samething every day I would recommend something more in depth if your purpose is to be inspired
