Throughout the world, it’s been common practice to dump garbage in poorer communities, and if not, the lower income resident usually live in the most polluted areas, near the dumps, coal bins, canals, and slaughterhouses. Take Vancouver’s “Low Track” as an example; it was a low-lying area that flooded easily, so you’d get sewage pollution whenever it rained, and who would want to live there? London’s Camden Lock is another example of low-income housing built near a polluted waterway. It may be stylish now, but in 1992, it was a mess. Tourists and locals came to the Camden Lock market to shop, browse, and take pictures, but you couldn’t be there at night. The smell from the canal made it the least desirable place to live. Toxic Communities turns things up a notch by studying how racism as well as poverty drives the “dump in the poor town” practice. Triana, Alabama, for instance, was polluted with DDT from the Tennessee River, and the locals were eating toxic fish, not out of a desire to “eat local,” but because they were hungry. Warren County, North Carolina, was the scene of a 1979 lawsuit to stop a PCB landfill. Love Canal is barely cited in this book, because it had nothing to do with racism or poverty. On the contrary, the dump was there before the houses were built, and the owners warned the town not to build there. The problem was that the town thought the canal was leak-proof, and it wasn’t. The residents were all white, so you can’t blame racism, but what if the town built low-income housing on the site? Could the town have force section-8 tenants to move in, so they could sell valuable land where existing housing projects were? Native American land in the USA is also in danger of pollution. The Skull Valley reservation in Utah is one example; a massive number of sheep died there in 1968 when gases escaped from a chemical site, and nowadays the US Army stores its waste there. The reason for Reservation pollution is simple; the Tribal Councils need money badly, and there’s so little oversight against corruption, so there’s little to stop someone from allowing tanker trucks full of sewage to dump things on the land. If there are mines on the Reservation, that’s also a problem. The Pine Ridge Reservation has radioactive tailings from the mines, and the local healthcare system is ill-equipped to deal with it. Mobility is probably half the problem. If Native American leaders let in the toxic waste, the residents can’t move away. Same thing in NYC, where NYCHA apartments often have black mold from leaking pipes (not to mention crime) and the residents can’t afford to live elsewhere. The book is well-written and researched, but it would’ve been better if there had been interviews with the residents of the communities that suffered from waste-dumping. Photos and maps would be welcome as well, because a lot of the places mentioned here are unfamiliar to the readers.

It would have changed my professional life by extracting much of the pain from the trial-and-error approach. Stephen Lekson has has most admirably poked his finger in the eye of the Four Corners/Chacoan archaeological "establishment" for some years. This work, updating his fantastic first edition of 1999 continues that proud tradition. This book is another masterpiece, another tour de force adventure in communication from the foremost living expert in the field. Lekson's writing is, to say the least, spirited. He professionally builds his argument on firm ground and sprinkles in the one-liners, puns and archaeological inside jokes in an ever entertaining and incredibly educating manner. If any of you have any interest in the Puebloan peoples of the southwestern or their ancestors, this is a "must read." I would find it hard to believe, as an archaeologist myself, that you could find any better "page turner" in the entire field!

The book’s eponymous meridian is 107 degrees 57 minutes 25 seconds, and it’s the north-south line upon which Chaco Canyon, New Mexico; Aztec Ruins, New Mexico; Paquime, Chihuahua and (ancient) Culiacan, Sinaloa are aligned. Lekson argues that this is intentional, not accidental, that the cardinal alignment (and this applies to both these sites and, in the case of Chaco and Paquime, the buildings within them), which is traced out quite clearly on the ground as “The Great North Road” between Chaco and Aztec, represents the dominance of one religio-astronomical tradition over another, that saw previous and subsequent dwellings facing southwest or southeast, corresponding to sunset and sunrise on the winter solstice. The latter is the more useful alignment for farmers, as the sun, not the stars, dominates their lives. Furthermore, he argues that all four sites were city-states were ruled by a nobility with strong Mesoamerican connections. They appeared first at Chaco (850-1125), subsequently colonized and migrated to Aztec, (1110-1275) then Paquime (1300-1450) and, more speculatively, Culiacan (?-1530). He finds evidence for the common heritage in architectural elements, such as colonnades, room-wide platforms, stone disks, double- and triple- walled buildings and T-shaped doors. The latter are also very common in numerous cliff dwellings in the Mexican Sierra Madre Occidental between Paquime and Culiacan.Great Houses characterized Chaco’s cultural zone: imposing formal constructions that, Lekson argues, reflect a stratified society dominated by a palace nobility. He further suggests that their form of government may have been the altepetl: a kingship that rotated amongst 6-8 noble families and whose occupant was elected for life. This was the norm in central Mexico at the same time Chaco was in its heyday. He gives further evidence of strong connections amongst Chaco, Paquime, the Mimbres (and, to a lesser extent, Aztec) with the South based on finds of luxury trade goods such as macaws (and macaw feathers), which don’t occur naturally anywhere north of central Mexico, copper bells and turquoise.Based on archeological and cultural evidence, Lekson thinks that the historical Pueblos (Zuni, Hopi, Acoma and along the Rio Grande) were founded by peoples who were subjugated by the Chaco nobility, but then revolted and freed themselves from their yoke during a time of extreme environmental stress (drought) in the 12th C-13th Cs. The egalitarian, ritual-based agricultural societies they founded were a reaction to the hierarchical system of Chaco.Finally, Lekson even suggests (if I read him right) that this migrating nobility might ultimately turn out to be kin to the Nahua/Mexica, whom we know as the Aztecs. According to their traditions, their last stop en route from their mythical northern home, Aztlan, to the Valley of Mexico was (you guessed it!) Culiacan. Working backwards from this, could Aztlan have been somewhere along the Chaco meridian?Lekson’s book is provocative, irreverent, very well written, and entertaining right through the footnotes and appendices! It should be of interest to anyone interested in the (pre-) history of the Southwest, from professionals to curious travellers.

This is Archeologist Steve Leksons musings on the possible connections between mesoamerica and the southwest , particularly Chaco Canyon and the great houses. Leksons a big picture guy, and he makes you think. Very readable, even to lay folks like me. I enjoyed it. He made me think about it too.

Finally, American Archeology begins to clear its head from the delusional mists of darwinistic,collectivist utopianism, and present some useful analysis and correlation of ancient American cultures. I consider this book to be a step in the return to sanity; a maturation of ideas to explain "those who came before".

Lekson does a great job of examining SW pre history and making sense of it. Highly recommended for SW Anasazi fans. Always trying to solve the mysteries. Good read.

I will join with many of the other reviewers and say that this book is a must read for anyone who has any type of self-defense weapon on their person or in their home. After reading the book, I've come to the sober conclusion that the law doesn't seem to favor the ordinary person who is simply trying to defend themselves. In order to prevail, it would seem that each person needs to have a law degree from Harvard, and the ability to slow down time in the event of lethal force situation. This is the case because the legal system, chops up your deadly force encounter, which is measured in seconds, into an esoteric academic exercise where the actions of the parties are scrutinized at the the nano-second level. One can almost imagine a panel of ancient philosophers, psychologists, and scholars evaluating who is in the right and who is in the wrong at any given fraction of a second in the timeline of events. In our system of justice, such reflection is done by the police, the DA's office, your defense attorney, and a jury of your peers -- folks who know nothing about the law.The author presents a very sobering view of how the legal system works for those who choose to defend themselves in a violent encounter. Yes, you may have killed the bad guy, and you may feel that you are right, but if the legal system choses to pursue your actions, you will have two outcomes; the price tag of your legal defense and your freedom, or, 20 years to life in prison. On several occasions, while reading, I thought that death or serious bodily injury might actually be a good option given the real possibility of jail for the rest of my life, a fate that might be assigned by a gun hostile jury or some real error I made in the deadly encounter.For all of those folks with high capacity magazines, heed this warning. Every single shot you fire in self-defense will be evaualted by the DA. As the author pointed out, there was a case where a subject fired 6 shots. Three were deemed self-defense, while the last 3 were considered attempted murder. The defender was convicted on the 3 "bad" shots and got a life sentence plus 90 years. So, a magazine with 20 rounds is a joke. If you shoot 20 rounds in a self defense case, you are in for a world of trouble with the justice system.Lastly, know your state laws. The author goes to great length to compare differences in state law for self-defense. Infact, the last third of this book, is a comprehensive digest of every state law for a meriad of serif-defense issues.This book is a must read for all gun owners.The purpose of this book, in my opinion, is to form a proper mental attitude for a self-defense situation. This book really makes you think about the "un-locks" you might have in order to draw a weapon and use it.

I purchased this book after seeing a positive review on a discussion forum from another forum member who took a live course with Andrew.I found it easy to read, entertaining and informative. I am a lawyer (but no experience with this area of law at all since law school years ago), and think it is well-suited to the general reader, as well as to lawyers or others more familiar with legal concepts and approaches - the author doesn't over-simplfy conplex concepts, but also makes the subject matter easily approachable.I also very much appreciate that the author maintains a website with up-to-date law revisions and new case law, as well as providing commentary on recent news stories / reports of defensive (or, regrettably, not) firearms use.There were a few instances of material / concepts that were substantially repeated only a paragraph or two away from previous, similar instances (*not* in the chapter summaries that are provided after each chapter) that a better job of editing might have addressed, but that did not, IMHO, detract from the overall value of the information presented or the style in which it was presented and explained.I think this book is an incredibly valuable resource for anyone who owns a firearm that might be used in a self-defense situation, and without hesitation would recommend it to the responsible firearm owner.

I am impressed with this book. I live in North Carolina and recently took a concealed carry course (which is required here prior to a concealed carry permit being issued). I bought this book because it was well reviewed. I didn't know what to expect; but, I must say, I am very impressed with this book.It is impossible to write a book that is thorough and explicit on the laws of concealed carry in all jurisdictions. That said, this book does a very fine job of approaching this task with the ever present caveat that laws in all jurisdictions are fluid things. The bulk of the book explores fundamental legal principles involved in deadly force applications, along with case law discussions applicable to specific historic instances in which deadly force was used.I honestly did not expect that this book would be so captivating. It is well written, in an informal language, that makes it very easy to comprehend and very difficult to put down once one has begun reading it.

When it comes to knowing the law when it comes to defending yourself, this is the book to read. Andrew Branca has studied the case law in all 50 states and gives you the a fairly comprehensive review. I enjoyed this story though I couldn't like Emma no matter how I tried. She was such a hot mess that it was hard to follow her psychological development and frankly some of it was a bit creepy. Cooper was a perfectly nice character but nothing about him stood out and he was just a standard "stock" romance hero. He'll be forgotten by tomorrow. And the HEA was a bit too one-sided (i.e. Emma made all the running...) and by the time I got to the last page I felt like I had slogged through a very long book. Leo was the bright light of this story though he was even more poignant than in the other books and I recommend having tissues on hand. In all, this was an okay read and Julia London's contemporaries remain on my auto buy list!

From the start, I liked Cooper, a real trooper, and thought Emma was a bit eccentric, just like in the previous books. I was somewhat puzzled as to where the writer was going by providing so much detail about 'party planning' and wandered, if the plot was a setting for something significant, which in actuality it was not? Although Emma being honest was too much for most of the characters in this book, I thought it was a good thing. Most people find honesty to be an affront when it should be the opposite. Emma was truly misunderstood. Of course these series would be nothing without Leo, oh how I loved him! This is a character that truly breaks my heart. Love what the writer does with the epilogue, where Leo death is crafted with so much dignity. Leo's death would have been totally devastating for the readers, especially for those that have read the complete series from the beginning, but the writer finesse makes it a bit less painful

I waited until I had read all three books before writing a review. All the characters seemed so real with all their problems and hang-ups. The author did an excellent portrait of each one. As crazy a life as each one had, they sure we're lucky to have Leo in their lives. All of us need a "genius" friend to give us advice and help us navigate through this crazy world we live in. Thank you for a wonderful trilogy.

I saved my review until I finished reading the entire trilogy. While I was reading I kept hoping, since it's a story, that a miracle cure for Leo would happen. In my opinion, Leo was the main character. He was the one that made me laugh and in the end cry. I loved the storyline and the entire cast of characters. The author did an excellent job portraying all the ups and downs of dealing with the things that everyone had to deal with in this crazy life we all live. Thank you for a beautiful story, I know it will be one I read again.

Really enjoyed reading the trilogy! Each book could stand alone, but as a package deal one was able to meet each individual character and form an association with all. Found the second book a little harder to relate to than the first and third because I was sad in the portrayals of the main character. Her actions and behaviors in part of it seemed way out of proportion, but I was glad she straightened things out and carried on in the manner more appropriate. Recommend this story to all who love good reading and a wonderful love story!

While I was a bit unsure of the first book, I did become immersed in the author's ability to weave a story around very flawed and complex characters. I found myself smiling through some passages and laughing out loud through others. But in the final chapter of the trilogy, I had to reach for a tissue. Well done, Ms. London.

If you have ever read a book, that you didn't want to end, this is one that definitely fits that description, you wait for every thing to work out, then when it does, you absolutely don't want to turn that last page, it may not be a story that everyone can identify with, but there are some parts that fit right in with something in your life that you can relate to in some form, so read it, you will mostly likely be like me and wish it does not end, thanks for this one.

I think the story was good. It had too much bad language and sexual content for me. Surely this authors can write stories without such content. I will never buy one of Julie London's books again. This is my thoughts on all three of her books in this series. This was also my first time reading her books.
