My initial reaction to the "Save the Hillbillies" slant reported for this book was "Why bother?" So it was a bit of a surprise to find the author, despite that background, managed to make it through Yale Law School.At first, one might assume that it was really some quirky circumstances that permitted that accomplishment and you would be right. Had it not been for the refuge of a strong grandmother, a seasoning and maturing stint in the Marines and innate intelligence and drive he admits he never would have made it.More of a memoir than a dissertation it was an interesting read. And, I tend to agree with the idea that the hillbilly in the holler is really a stand-in for America's blue collar workers. As the recent election proved, if we do not find a path to the solid middle class through education and training these folks are truly doomed and the nation as a whole will be poorer for it.

I speak from experience as someone that grew up in the heartland but has spent years in often elite circles on either coast.Two things struck me most about this book.First, the unflinching yet not judgmental portrayal of the circumstances and of the people involved. It is difficult to write on this subject without either glossing over the ugliness and making warm and fuzzy appeals to idealism and human nature, Hollywood style, or without on the other hand descending into attempts at political persuasion and calls to activism. This book manages to paint the picture, in deeply moving ways, without committing either sin, to my eye.Second, the author's growing realization, fully present by the end of the work, that while individuals do not have total control over the shapes of their lives, their choices do in fact matter—that even if one can't direct one's life like a film, one does always have the at least the input into life that comes from being free to make choices, every day, and in every situation.It is this latter point, combined with the general readability and writing skill in evidence here, that earns five stars from me. Despite appearances, I found this to be an inspiring book. I came away feeling empowered and edified, and almost wishing I'd become a Marine in my younger days as the author decided to do—something I've never thought or felt before.I hate to fall into self-analysis and virtue-signaling behavior in a public review, but in this case I feel compelled to say that the author really did leave with me a renewed motivation to make more of my life every day, to respect and consider the choices that confront me much more carefully, and to seize moments of opportunity with aplomb when they present themselves. Given that a Hillbilly like the author can find his way and make good choices despite the obstacles he's encountered, many readers will find themselves stripped bare and exposed—undeniably ungrateful and just a bit self-absorbed for not making more of the hand we've been dealt every day.I'm a big fan of edifying reads, and though given the subject matter one might imagine this book to be anything but, in fact this book left me significantly better than it found me in many ways. It also did much to renew my awareness of the differences that define us in this country, and of the many distinct kinds of suffering and heroism that exist.Well worth your time.

I spent most of the last 2 days reading this book and I can't stop thinking about it. I never heard of the author until I saw him on Morning Joe a few days ago but I looked him up and read several articles he wrote for various publications so I bought his book. He grew up in a family of what he describes as "hillbillies" from Kentucky but spent most of his life in Ohio. His family identified as being strongly Christian even though their behavior was frequently not particularly Christian. He was mostly raised by his grandparents along with his half-sister because his mother was an addict who went from husband to husband and he barely knew his father. He did poorly in school and was only redeemed by the fact that a cousin pushed him into joining the Marines. From there he went to Ohio State and then to Yale Law School.He writes very directly and honestly about the problems with white, working class America and why it is in decline. While part of the problem is societal, he believes there is an internal problem that government cannot do anything about. He suggests that tribalism, mistrust of outsiders and "elites," violence and irresponsibility among family members, parents without ethics and a sense of responsibility, terrible work ethics, and an us-against-them mentality is dooming the people who live that way to becoming poorer, more addicted, and more marginalized. Excellent book and very thought-provoking.

Kiana is an amazingly talented floral designer. By far my biggest inspiration in the world of flora. I LOVE this book. Having watched many of her classes and tutorials and following her blog really helps to immerse yourself in the stunning collection of arrangements. (And I think it’s so so cute that her hubby is her photographer ❤️) I’d recommend this to ANYONE into flowers, asymmetric arrangements, garden style and anyone who truly appreciates the beauty of flowers.

Every adult in America--especially parents--needs to read this book! Joe Horn's story is horrifying; what a hard way to learn! I am so thankful that he decided to use his experience to help others avoid the same difficult path, and heal others in a similarly awful place.I'm a veterinarian, and I've been doing pet nutrition research for decades. What I discovered *first* was that pet food is made from leftovers and waste products of the human food industry. And that is some scary stuff! Even though I've done so much research, there were things in this book that really surprised me--and inspired me to change my own diet (which I thought was pretty good) in significant ways.This book brings reams of information together in one place, in a readable, user-friendly format. "Timebomb" will surely become your favorite health reference book. In fact, I'm going to get the Kindle version too, so I can have it on my phone and refer to it when I'm in the grocery store! Please, take Joe's advice and learn what is really going on in the food industry, how to protect yourself and your family, and how to be your healthy, vibrant best.

Good and informative. Makes me think seriously about changing my diet. It has made me look at our food supply in a totally different light. Author did fantastic job writing this, and he has lived the side effects of what our processed food can do and is doing to our bodies.

The things in this book are the things that people should be aware of! There is too much being held back from us! And it's just not right in general!

I am still in the process of reading this. It is an amazing revelation of what chemical combinations can do to humans. I have been amazed for years that the FDA and other government agencies approve of chemical additions to foodstuffs without antiquate investigation of what these chemicals can cause when in certain combinations. The best course for all of us is to avoid all foodstuffs that have massive lists of chemicals and/or ingredients we don't recognize.

Excellent and informative. Full of facts.

This author speaks from his own personal experience which lends it credit and power. Our health care system usually seems to toss aside the effects from our diet. They usually don't even ask about it and yet, it can be the actual issue. I recommend this book to anyone interested in getting healthier.

 S’Mores Brownies    1 cup (8 oz/250 g) unsalted butter, plus more for greasing   10 oz (315 g) bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped   1 cup (8 oz/250 g) granulated sugar   ¾ cup (6 oz/185 g) firmly packed light brown sugar   4 large eggs   2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract   1 teaspoon kosher salt   1 1 ⁄3 cups (5½ oz/170 g) cake flour   3 tablespoons natural cocoa powder   About 6 graham crackers, roughly crushed with your hands   About 12 jumbo marshmallows  Makes 12 brownies  Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Generously butter a 9-by-13-inch (23-by-33-cm) baking dish.  In a large saucepan over low heat, combine the butter and chocolate and heat, stirring often, until melted, about 4 minutes. Remove from the heat and whisk in the granulated sugar and brown sugar. Whisk in the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Whisk in the vanilla and salt.  Sift the flour and cocoa powder over the chocolate mixture and, using a rubber spatula, stir in until just blended. Stir in the graham crackers.  Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Top evenly with the marshmallows.  Tip: To make it easier to cut the brownies, fill a tall glass or pitcher with very hot water. Dip your knife in the water and wipe it off with a paper towel before each cut. This technique also works great for cutting cookie bars and frosted layer cakes.

A lovely collection of the classics. Tried and true recipes.

I'm not at all impressed with this cookbook. Only one of the three recipes I made turned out good. Most of the cookies look unappetizing.**I received this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**THINGS I'VE MADELemon Cream Sandwich Cookies- I didn't make the lemon filling because I don't like cream cheese so I just used raspberry jam. This cookie dough was very easy to work with and is in fact the best roll-out dough I've ever worked with. Unfortunately it's basically the same as a shorbread cookie and the baked cookie is crumbly and the cookies soften a lot, even in an air-tight container. For that reason alone I wouldn't make these again because I don't like a soft cookie. I got 32 2" sandwich cookies.Oatmeal-Raisin Cookies- These are very good and the recipe is basic. They use rolled oats and both types of sugar, white and brown.Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies- These cookies taste alright but they aren't perfect. They're ordinary and the doughballs didn't spread much at all. I had to flatten the rest of the unbaked balls with the back of a measuring cup. I won't be making these again and mine look nothing like the ones in the book. They're like two different cookies.Using a 1.5" diameter/1T. scoop I got 53 doughballs. I used 1c. mini semisweet chocolate chips and 1 1/4 c. toasted and chopped pecans.

Loved this book so much I bought one for myself. I originally gave it as a gift but I was so impressed I got one as well. Beautiful photos, easy instructions and the cookie choices were great!

Small, cute, little book with easy classic cookie recipes.I’ve baked up the almond cookies. They were crispy on outside, & soft on inside. They taste like soft version of shortbreads on the inside. I loved them. Not too sweet, just right.The butterscotch macadamia cookies were delicious. However, I might tone down the salt next time around, because it was a tad too much.. Was a little sweet for my taste, but some minor adjustments and it’ll be fine.The peanut butter cookies were delicious. Crispy on outside, soft in the inside.If you want your cookies to stay crispy, placing about 1/4c of baking soda in the same container as cookies would keep the cookies crispy.
