I purchased this book to reference in an art history term paper on Joseph Beuys, for some supplemental insight into the mythos of the coyote... I wound up getting distracted by this book and procrastinated finishing the paper to read it. Yes, it's that good.This book has definitely aged well. The text is well written and clear, and although this text is decades older than I am, it didn't feel dated at all. The illustrations are lovely, and the cloth cover of this edition of it is particularly handsome.Dobie's The Voice of the Coyote is a great read, I'd highly recommend it for coyote nerds like myself.

For those who want to learn more about North America's most intelligent animal, the coyote, this is a renowned source. It is written for the average reader and you don't have to be a scientist to understand it.Coyotes have been unjustly maligned by the special interests of agriculture and hunters. However, these books are based on science and observation, not on myth and the pursuit of profit.I'd also highly recommend God's Dog by Hope Ryden God's Dog: A Celebration of the North American Coyote and Eastern Coyote by Gerry Parker Eastern Coyote as well as The Daily Coyote The Daily Coyote: A Story of Love, Survival, and Trust in the Wilds of Wyomingand Barbara Kingsolver's masterpiece of fiction, Prodigal Summer Prodigal Summer: A Novel.

I really loved this book. I bought it because I was doing research on Coyotes for a novel I was writing, and I thought I would skim this, but I read it word for word instead. Perhaps because I already had an interest in coyotes, but I came home every night looking forward to reading more. If you love animals, you'll love this book. Well written, easy to ready, interesting stories, etc.

As an avid reader of True Crime this book was just ho-hum for me. It was ok, I was able to put it down & forget about it. Average read to pass the time. Felt the story was a little self serving to the wife, as we only hear her side. Would have loved to read interviews from James' family.

This was a detailed account of life with James Bergstrom, a voyeuristic deviant who liked bondage and raping women. The viewpoint is primarily that of his wife, Linda, who appears to be a simpleton, but who was the only one who seemed to know her husband for what he was. Her cries and complaints about him to law enforcement fell on seemingly deaf ears for some time. No one was able to stop him til he had attacked numerous women.No one comes out smelling like a rose in the author's account: not his wife, nor his family, nor local law enforcement authorities. All were complicit in allowing James Bergstrom to continue his spree with wild abandonment, though his wife did make some futile efforts to get him to cease and desist, succeeding only after many years. To her credit, she cooperated with the authorities, when he was finally arrested.Though the book was quite detailed, and it is clear that the author did her homework, I found it to be a bit tedious and repetitious. The fact that I thought the wife to be repellent in her ignorance and stupidity did not enhance the story. I found myself largely unsympathetic towards her. Still, devotees of the true crime genre should find some enjoyment in the author's account of the life and crimes of this deviant.

This is the first book that I have read by Kathryn Casey, and wow what a book it is.It takes place in Washington State and Texas, mostly Texas.As a woman, I often ask myself when you hear of domestic abuse etc. why a woman would stay with her abuser.Well.. folks.. read this book and you will find out why.This is the TRUE story of a serial rapist married to a wife who repeatedly tells the police about her husband being a rapist and NOTHING is done about it.This gives you the inside look at how a serial rapist mind works, and how it affects everyone around him.Be sure to read this and as a woman, you will never leave your doors and windows open again.Good Book.. but very sad that there are monsters out there, and so much that the law cannot do to protect us.

As children, many of us are terrified of the boogey-man who hides under our beds or possibly in our closets and cause many to have fear issues of the dark, so can you possibly imagine what poor Linda Bergstrom had to go through sleeping right next to a monster in her marital bed?I'm so damn thankful that James Bergstrom is in jail, for what I pray to be, the rest of his horrible, rotten, miserable existence. What he did to his wife, as well as all the women he terrified and raped, doesn't even come close to what he truly deserves. Prison is too good for this idiot! I think the death penalty would have been even better, at least it would give his ex-wife total peace of mind knowing exactly where his ass is!He comes up for parole every few years, and that's too often! He should never ever, ever get out of prison for the havoc he wreaked on his innocent victims.This was an outstanding true-crime novel. I usually love reading Ann Rule's books, but seeing that she endorsed this one, I see why she did. Kathryn did an exceptional job detailing and outlining all the facts in this horrendous story. And the best part of the novel was most definitely the ending. SUPERB! A must read for any true-crime buff!

In some parts of the world, characters like the sick and twisted protagonist of this story, would probably get killed before he causes more harm, but in the story Evil Beside Her: The True Story of a Texas woman's marriage to a dangerous psychopath, it seems he is allowed to carry on with no problems. The able Kathryn Casey know how to write True Crime, and this story is no exception. The part that baffled me was that the wife of this perverted, abusive excuse for a human being, did not get any type of assistance, and thanks to her persistent will power, she finally was able to put closure to what must have been, without a doubt, a very stressful and dangerous existence, at the hands of this psychopath.For the money the book was a nice value for those who favored the hard to believe world of True Crime. Law enforcement has a way sometimes, to let characters like these, slip through the cracks, allowing them plenty of opportunities to do what their sick minds love best. Too many rights for the accused, and very few for the victims, makes this story one more example of how these type of individuals keep going on and on.Not one thing to like about this person, but plenty of things to like of his wife, that at firs could not even comprehend how horrendous his husband behavior was, and when she did, she unfailingly did not give up the fight to liberate herself from his presence. 4 Stars.

Boring.... Although I realize in an abusive relationship there is a learned helplessness a woman goes through, some of the action she took was just plain dumb. Had I been his wife if I had learned he was a sexual predator, there is no way in hell I could have stayed, and the mere fact she had a baby with this monster then had to worry if he had done something to the child infuriated me. It was way past the time to leave. I'm sorry if I'm judging her, and even though I have this same background, him being a sexual predator and keeping my child safe is a guarantee, I'm gone.This man is a man who could never take up for himself, a wimp, as a result, he took all his hate, anger, and rage out on women. As much is the case they fear men. I'm so glad she got married again, I'm still not able to trust men.

It's a copy of a book published in 1709, a British Edition.It's okay, but there are 4 ilustrations by page (too small) and the quality is not good enough to see the details.The text is about colors too, but the ilustrations are all in black and white (probably like the original).I'm trying the second one, "Della novissima iconologia" (Italian Edition).

Black and white drawings are indistinctly copied, but what's worse is the description of the icon is on the wrong page and not opposite the drawings!! Totally uncarefully and greedily done.

This was like taking a trip down memory lane as the author mentions many things in passing that reminded me of my stay in Greece. On one level it is an account of the writer’s move to Crete with her husband and young daughter and although the account is sometimes funny and always interesting, there isn’t anything that sets this story apart from any of the other similar expat accounts. What does make it special are the numerous recipes that the author includes in the book. With such mouth-watering delicacies I still don’t understand how she managed to lose weight whilst in Greece but I’m going to happily give the recipes a try.

This work does not belong on a bookshelf in a dust jacket like so many “leadership” volumes—it belongs, well-thumbed, on the couch, in a purse, and most importantly, in everyday, animated conversation about Shackleton, Carson, and others as the fully-fleshed, crushingly human individuals shown in these pages.

Moving and necessary! At a time when America and the world are hungry for visionary leadership, this is a must-read. I've had the good fortune of seeing Dr. Koehn lecture numerous times, but it takes reading this book to fully appreciate the breadth and power of her intellect and passion. Some of these stories will be familiar -- like those of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Others are lesser known -- like that of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, anti-Nazi theologian and spy who gave his life resisting Hitler's terror. All of them are powerfully relevant--especially as told by Dr. Koehn who uncovers new insights and eloquently distills connections to today.

I have had this book in my library for a full year and have avoided reading it believing it to be rather heavy reading but decided it was time to give the book a shot. I found author Nancy Koehn's reading style interesting and easy to follow. The book took her over ten years to write but she has weaved a very interesting story of five individuals who, despite their self-doubts and periods of despondency, soldiered on and completed their overwhelming task. Shackleton had the task of returning his group home from his iced-in ship in Antarctic waters. Lincoln vowed to keep the country as one during the Civil War. Douglass poured his efforts into eradicating slavery. Bornhoeffer gave his life fighting against Germany's Third Reich. Lastly Rachel Carson fought for environmental concerns and the abolishment of harmful pesticides.In weaving her story about each individual author Koehn points out leadership qualities involved that the person displayed and probably didn't know they possessed and how these same qualities the reader can use in their own life. If you are interested in learning what made these persons "tick" in these crucial situations you should find this book interesting reading. I initially feared the book would discourage me from continuing onward but, thankfully, this was not the case. Give the book a chance. I believe you will enjoy it. The book contains eight pages of photos.

I enjoyed these five biographies with the special focus on each of the featured individuals' development of leadership skills under crisis. None of them were ordinary people-- Ernest Shackleton, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Rachel Carson--but they went into overdrive when overwhelming demands were put on them. I thought at first, "Ho, hum, another look at Abe Lincoln," but this book focuses on the development of the seeds of greatness in his character, brought about by the overwhelming responsibility of keeping the United States united and the inescapable moral dilemma of accomplishing this without succumbing to the demands of those who wished to continue the institution of slavery. I knew the story of Frederick Douglass, but this book focused on how his fierceness and intelligence was channeled toward supporting the cause of abolition and exercising a crucial difference on Lincoln. Others fought for their lives while striving to accomplish their goals. Bonhoeffer's writings redefined Christianity as a religion less focused on getting into heaven and more strident in the fight for social justice. These writings were composed while Bonhoeffer was imprisoned by the Nazis (who eventually killed him only two weeks before the Allies liberated his prison). Shackleton's struggle hinged on the physical survival of himself and his men in Antarctica, and, had he not exercised the leadership skills that he did, he and his crew would have perished. Rachel Carson, my favorite, financially supported her family of origin and extended family after surviving the discouraging academic environment for women in science. She combined her love of nature with her writing ability and became a respected scientific and popular writer in the 1950s, but her most amazing achievement was to expose the danger of DDT and other pesticides in the environment through her book, "Silent Spring." If I were teaching a high school or college history course, I would use this as a text. The book contains the kinds of lessons we all need to learn from history and from those who make history and lead us in positive, saving directions.

It's been said that leadership is "influence that inspires..." I believe Dr. Koehn has achieved something very special with her wonderful book. It is not only informational; it equally inspirational...perhaps even transformational. Our leaderly selves need more noble aims and to be presented with examples of those who have most definitely risen to the occasion.. I loved her choice of past leaders; I loved her word choice in explaining the inner lives and drives of these people; and I loved the just-right length of each individual biography. Like most busy adults I have little time for outside reading, but I made the time to read this book, and the reward has been so fulfilling! Although she is obviously a scholar of great magnitude and depth, she found a way to share her excitement with us -- the general public -- through language that is clear, simple, impactful. I heard her say when interviewed a few months ago that it took her 15 years to write the book (although she said 10 years in the book). This is a terrific book for anyone to own and enjoy and would especially make a great gift for current and future leaders!
