It's Friday night and I find myself standing at the edge of this horrible black chasm. I'm beginning to realize I may have to make a choice between my alcoholic child and myself. I can't believe I am even considering this but my doctor is becoming concerned. If my blood pressure doesn't improve she is suggesting medication, if my cholesterol doesn't improve she is suggesting medication, if my blood sugar keeps moving in the direction it is trending she is suggesting insulin. She is telling me I must reduce the stress in my life. I can't remember the last time I was able to sit in my home and enjoy a peaceful evening. Ever vigilant to the sounds coming from my adult child's home next door. Is the yelling just a loud tv program or is she and the boyfriend du jour having another fight. Is the crash I hear something or someone being thrown against the wall or just a door being closed too hard? It's late and I hear her car start up. Is she already drunk and heading out for more or is she heading to the bar to get blackout drunk and drive home that way? Should I call the police and warn them she is driving drunk and endangering everyone else on the road? Another promise has been broken and this time in such a cruel way I feel it is so personal but the other realization I am coming to is that it has nothing to do with me. She hasn't thought or worried about anyone but herself for a very long time. She is so deep in her addiction that's all she can see now and the loving thoughtful child I used to know is gone, lost in the alcoholic mist. How can I abandon her but how can I go on living like this? She cries, she promises, she claims to need me but it is becoming more and more clear she only needs me to use when it suits her and we are both growing sicker every day in this awful dance we do. I feel like I am standing on the curb watching this horrible crash beginning to unfold and there is nothing I can do to prevent it. All I can do is stand there and pray there is something left to salvage when it is over. I turn to the internet to look for help, answers, comfort, something and I stumble across this book. I order the sample for my kindle and as soon as I have finished it I order the book. I read into the night. I am brought to tears when the author talks about losing the family he remembers. I too have been mourning the loss of the times we were together laughing so hard our sides hurt, sharing delicious meals and playing games together. It's all gone now. I've lost my son to alcohol and now my daughter is slipping away. I read on and see my own life in the pages of this book and am so relieved to find out I am not the only one facing this heart breaking, gut wrenching choice. I'm not the only one struggling with the feelings of guilt and anger. I find the practical suggestions helpful and the realization that I am not the only parent standing on the edge of this awful chasm helps me calm and begin to think about what I am willing and able to do and what I am no longer willing or able to do. I highly recommend this to anyone loving and trying to live with an alcoholic.

This book literally saved my sanity. For anyone who has a child that is caught up in the insane world of substance abuse, this book should be required reading.It shows that you are not alone, that your feelings are what all of us feel in this situation and that hard as it is, there is a way back for you, the parent, to save yourself. Mr. Rubin is to be applauded for his honest and frank discussion of his own experience and for his solid and workable advice to parents on recovering their own lives in the midst of the hell that is the addiction of one's child. He also makes it clear that as much as the parent wants to help and save their child, the more important thing is to save yourself, because the child has to make the decision themselves to get help and turn their own life around.Mr. Rubin's greatest gift in this book is to tell his readers that they don't have to sacrifice themselves on the alter of "being a good parent" for a child hell bent on destruction, addiction and using the parents to sustain their habits, because the best thing to do is save yourself first, so you can be ready if and when the child is serious about getting clean. The parent has and is entitled to a life also, apart from addictions of their children.I have already given this book to several people I know in this struggle and sadly, I have a feeling will be giving several more.

This book changed my life. My son is an addict and it was eating me alive. I could have almost written some of the case studies in the book, so it really hit home and told me I am not alone in this struggle. It is no exaggeration to say that the book changed my life. At the time I read it I was so filled with anxiety that I was on two different anti-anxiety / anti-depression drugs and spending each night tossing and turning. After reading it, I got off those meds and am now back among the human race. This book won't solve your problems or your kids' problems, but it sure made it clear to me that I had already done what I could and now it is up to my son. It is extreme tough love, but anything much short of that just doesn't seem to work. I still fear for my son's future, but have accepted that it is not something that I can change - he has to do the changing.

Mr. Rowland is nothing if not a reliably talented author. Even this foray into the short story is well done. The scope of the story is very narrow, including only Darcy's confession to Bingley and subsequent return to Netherfield, Lydia's near ruin, and Darcy 's pursuit of Elizabeth. Mr. Bennett is admirable in this variation, which is refreshing. Jane Austen is a master of sarcastic wit, and so many of her characters have annoying quirks. How many times have I wished that Mr. Bennett would step up and take charge in the face of his daughter's folly and with Elizabeth 's attempts at opening his eyes. Finally there is some sparks of interest in tackling his responsibilities.The writing is good, the editing is superb, and the whole tale can be consumed in a couple of hours. Bravo!

I have several of Mr. Rowland's books, but I believe this novella is my favorite. Love this Mr. Bennet and Mr. Darcy. And, although the overall theme of this story is more sober, there were several laugh out loud moments for me. I highly recommend it for a quick and enjoyable read.

Like me, you probably don’t think of Papa Bennet as a great man.We are accustomed to a Mr. Bennet who neglects his estate, his daughters and especially his wife.In “Mr. Bennet Takes Charge” we meet a Mr. Bennet who is capable of reforming.As in canon, Elizabeth has warned her father of the perils of allowing Lydia to journey to Brighton with very little supervision. As in canon, Lydia indulges herself and writes to Kitty with her plans to elope. Unlike the canon story, Kitty speaks to her sister Elizabeth who has not gone to the Lakes.Quote from the book: “Do you not think elopements are the most romantic thing?”Elizabeth hustles her sister and Lydia’s letter to their Father’s book room. Mr. Bennet, Elizabeth and … surprise … Mr. Darcy journey to Brighton to head off the runaways.Things do not pass for what they are, but for what they seem. Most things are judged by their jackets. ~ Baltasar GraciánThe retribution Mr. Bennet will attempt astounds and frightens his daughters. This Mr. Bennet is unforgettable!! This is my all-time favorite portrayal of Mr. Bennet. He's been hiding out in his bookroom for years, and his interaction with his daughters has been minimal (with the exception of Elizabeth). When faced with potential harm to Lydia, he roars to life...takes charge, and vanquishes the enemy (Wickham). Mr. Bennet's true nature shocked everyone, including Elizabeth. I GREATLY enjoyed the wit, intelligence and countenance of this Bennet. I always love this author's books...always extremely well-written and engaging. I wholeheartedly give this book five stars...and would have given it more if I were allowed to do so! GREAT story...if you want to read a story where Mr. Bennet is truly memorable, then this is the book for you!!! I highly, HIGHLY recommend this book!!!!

Enjoyable. Most appreciated by those of us who often wish that Mr B would be more invested in his family. I never fail to enjoy these stories where Wickham is brought to swift justice. Well done, and wishing that it was longer as I seldom read novellas or short stories.A few misspelled words that should have been caught by edit.

I always enjoy Mr Rowland's work, and this book has proven to continue that trend. I enjoyed seeing Mr Bennet exert himself for his family, and it was a novelty to see the events only from that man's perspective. I could only wish for more interaction between he and Colonel Fitzwilliam, as those two worthies would be hilarious together. 10/10 would recommend.

I really enjoyed mr Rowland’s mr Bennet! The “traditional “ personality was there but also a determination and strength seldom seen in this character.Another surprise was mr Darcy who readily and verbally made clear hisDesire to have Elizabeth as his wife.All in all, quite an enjoyable read!!

Well told story. That Mr. Bennet’s secret(s) could not be known by Mrs. Bennet seems far fetched but some suspension of belief is always needed for fictional stories.I recommend this fast, enjoyable story.

I have VERY mixed feelings about this memoir. Firstly, it was riveting. The story is absolutely fascinating, vivid, and honest. Parts are painfully-relatable for anyone who suffers from depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder. The battle for control of the mind, emotions, body, environment, relationships, etc..rings true. But the book has a disturbing scream of "look at me" that seems to be the larger statement. Yes, Suzy is a victim of her illness. Yes, she grew up with tremendous pressure (much self-inflicted) to "win." But I was left with the feeling that the recent publicity explosion is just another manic chapter in a life of addictions. From the interview on 20/20, to the Dr. Phil feature, and countless articles promoting the release of the book, it is just more frenzy. Every chapter in the book is separated with 2 italicized pages of "insight" into mental illness, providing evidence that the book is intended to be something of a teaching tool. Sadly, I ended the read feeling concern for Suzy that she has traded one high for another, and continues to sacrifice her family in the process. Truly, a guilty pleasure.

Absolutely riveting read, however, it was clearly intended to entertain and not to help those with undiagnosed bipolar. Annoyingly enough, Favor-Hamilton consistently mentions throughout the memoir that helping people who are mentally ill is all she wants and intends to do by writing the book and doing countless interviews and tell-alls. She is clearly still very much in the throes of her illness and watching her interviews cements that point: she is as manic as ever. I wish her well.

I enjoyed the book because it gave me insight into an interesting human being. I feel very sorry for everybody who loves this woman, especially her daughter. This woman seems to be a me, me, me person. I can't believe she has such a loving, forgiving, understanding husband. HE IS AMAZING. I would have dumped her when she wanted a threesome in Vegas and definitely after the threesome when she becomes addicted to an insanely destructive lifestyle. She is so wrapped up in herself, she sort of blames her family, her husband, Madison, Wisconsin, anybody but herself, for her problems. And yet, because I know someone who is like this TOO WELL, I know she probably can't help it. People like her are a lot of work, and I wonder that Mark finds her worth the trouble. What is HIS problem? Why doesn't he want to settle down with someone sane? Do I think she's better at the end of the book? No. I think she got caught and is in between acts.

As I read Suzy's story, I began to learn the reasons for a close relatives behavior. Growing up with her, I could never understand why she always seemed to be in a battle with any one of our relatives, friends etc. She could be the life of the party and turn into a mean girl on a dime. She eventually alienated most of us. As bipolar disorder has become more public, I have always wondered if she had finally received the proper diagnosis and was treated with the proper medication, I pray she had. I commend Miss Hamilton for her candor and wish her the best.

I was highly disappointed by this book in all honesty. Thought the excuse of bipolar was a good reason to confess to a "fast Life" however, Suzy Hamilton was unable to prove her point to me that her lifestyle was due to her mental state and not ambition.For anyone who is a fan of sports stars and Olympians, this might be an interesting read. I just found it titillating in the wrong way. Her competitive nature drove her to become the top of her game in Las Vegas as a high class escort to the shock and horror of her beautiful family. That in and of itself is somewhat admirable as she lived the life of a career woman which is often not what escorting is chalked up to being.Would I say this choice was based on mental illness? No. I don't think in this book which has a ghost writer by the way, that point was never really proven as it took her years apparently to achieve the heights of this ambitious career and never was it mentioned that she remained on her antidepressant medications the entire time which would have to be true for her hypothesis to be proven.Yes there is truth to the fact that antidepressants which is a very new idea can cause undiagnosed mania. This is a fault on the pharmaceutical companies and lax psychiatrists. I don't think the history of mental illness is Hamilton's family is necessary the issue.At any rate, for the mental illness factor, I would give this book a lower rating. If you are interested in the life of an escort from a realistic perspective, I would give it a higher score.

A quick, easy read. Lots of gaps. Clear bouncing around within the narrative of Suzy's life. Suggestive, but not graphic. I wasn't expecting Jane Austen, but I would've liked more meat on the bones of this story. I found it to be very superficial and not in depth about any aspect of Suzy's life.

I take offense with someone who uses mental illness as an excuse for immoral choices. I suffer from bipolar with hypersexuality. It can takes years of therapy & medication to deal with the shame & confusion. Suzy has none. All I got out of the book was disgust with her as a wife & mother.

I couldn't put it down...read it all in 2 days. I wish she didn't gloss over some of the story, but it was a real page turner. Women like her should not be ostracized. Dr. Phil (who is not a real doctor) should shut his mouth.

There are some excellent patterns in this book and the photography is very good. I love the color photos of each edging pattern. They use written patterns instead of diagrams, but they are very easy to follow. I have already made 3 of the patterns in the book.

Has some good instructions in but not enough dolie patterns for the cost.

Easy to read on the, I like being able to zoom in and see the sample stitches on the Kindle.

This book does exactly what it advertises. A nice selection of patterns that are useful for edgings or insertions. Clear directions and beautiful pictures of the finished product makes patterns that are easy to follow.

I find the book easy to follow and I have made some of the items in the book. Do need experience in tatting.

One of the worst tatting books I have ordered. Most of the patterns are taken from OLD books and have been published in most other tatting books. Some people have even dared to copywrite them; at least this book didn't do that.Seriously, this book is NOT worth a penny or your time!

I highly recommend this Dover text as either a self-tutorial or as a quick review of matrices. I initially thought that a text for the "non-mathematics science student" might prove too elementary to be useful. It actually provides a thorough, concise (but not terse) introduction to matrices that is quite appropriate for undergraduate students in physics or chemistry. The sections on eigenvalues and eigenvectors, on diagonalization of matrices, and on functions of matrices were particularly good.I am reasonably familiar with linear algebra and matrices and read this book partially for review, but more out of general interest. I was surprised at how effectively Stephenson managed in only 150 pages to explore key topics at some depth without sacrificing his tutorial style. I am puzzled that that this book is not better known. It is quite well-written and I give it five stars. The price is quite affordable and I don't believe that you will find a better overview of matrices at even much higher prices.Don't be concerned that this is not a new book (first published in 1965). The matrix notation is modern and consistent with current textbooks. The author, G. Stephenson, was Emeritus Reader of Mathematics, Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London.I also recommend two other Dover reprints. Matrices and Transformations by Anthony Pettofrezzo is a more basic introduction. An Introduction to Linear Algebra and Tensors by M. A. Akivis and V. V. Goldberg is a good next step after Stephenson's text.

I like the stile and didatic of Prof. Stephenson and this little book does a good job to teach mainly matrices (the chapters on sets and groups are very shorts, however they are helpfuls). Its level is introdutory (but not properly elementary),the stuff is very well explained and the exercises are coherent with the text (they are essencial parts to learn and fix the matter).It lacks some things like to invert matrices by the method of elementary matrices and the Jordan canonical matrices. Out that, it's almost a complete introduction.Because it is terse and have various topics of constante use, it is also useful as a quick reference book.I agree with the previous reviever that is best to study first some other more elementary text to a full benefit.Although a bit outdated, I recomend also the other books of Prof. Stephenson if there is interest in theirs contents: Mathematical Methods for Science Students, Partial Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers, Advanced Methods for Engineering and Science Students.

The researchers wear spacesuits and go through different levels before they can enter the area for researching such viruses as Ebola-a hole in your glove could mean certain death; you'd also be sent to a hospital where you'd have no chance to infect others - you'd die alone, a most grisly death too, as you'll read in the descriptions of people who died of Ebola.Of special interest is the story of the spread of Ebola in Africa before it became a known virus.Scary Non-fiction told in the author's usual riveting style.

He exclaimed. I started watching shows like Outbreak. We saw it in the theater. Remember that sneeze? I nearly ran out of there when someone coughed.I grew--good or bad, I guess that's for others to judge. But lately, I can watch a disaster movie, or The Walking Dead and notice only the social reaction to the monsters or the disease or the overwhelming snow. So I thought I could now face this book.Reading happens at bedtime. Bet you can guess how this book blended into dreams. And since I listened as I read the Kindle with the Audible, that voice! Richard M. Davidson's voice. What a deep bass and excellent for the genre! Creepy and authoritative! Wow!What I learned is that my characters in my book were dressed properly to deal with their strains of disease. And I learned I never want to be anywhere near someone coughing! If I was a germaphobe before... well, let's just say there isn't enough hand sanitizer in the world for me!Knowing this is nonfiction made this even more frightening. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago there was an Ebola scare. What a horrid disease! And this author did a poetic job of helping the reader to see it and feel it. If you haven't read it yet, climb out of your hiding place and give it a try. Forewarned is forearmed as they say. Might as well get the Audible version to make it even more real. I will try to read more of his books now. Time for more vitamin C and Airborne!

I missed this book altogether when it first was published, but I did see it around the house. One of my sons read it, and told me the other day the book helped him decide on a career in medicine -- he's now in his sixth year of an M.D.-Ph.D. program . He told me this the other day when we were talking Ebola. So I decided to read it. Wow!Preston is a good storyteller, and he recounts the appearance of Ebola in suburban Washington as though this real-life event were a thriller, as, indeed, it turned out to be. I've read that Preston plans a new edition of the book, to correct what might be some overstatements in the course of an Ebola infection. I also wonder whether he will address the belief expressed in the Hot Zone that Ebola can be spread by airborne means.On the legal side, Preston has a good understanding of the law's inherent conservatism. When military brass was trying to decide how best to confine the outbreak of Ebola at a facility housing research monkeys, the officers conclude that it is best to act first, before seeking legal advice. Once they acted, the lawyers could always defend the emergency measures taken as legal. I chuckled when I read that, recognizing the inherent conservatism of a lawyer's advice.I enjoyed this book immensely. It gives insight into medical research, public health and military preparedness for a biohazard disaster. Surprisingly, it appears we don't know much more about Ebola than what we knew in 1995, when this book was published -- except that the virus still lives and is still capable of enormous destruction.

Unbelievable.I just got it in the mail five minutes ago, so I can't speak to the content, but I can tell you this: The book is ENTIRELY printed with one font size (which, again, is small), and very little formatting efforts made to assist the reader. Everything is single spaced, with a single line between paragraphs. This even holds true when a new chapter begins! This book could really not be formatted any worse. See the photo of the open book.Amazon, you should NOT be selling this particular edition!

Every Christian really needs to read this.

This is in old english and very hard to read. I ended up ordering... Foxe's Book of Martyrs (Pure Gold Classics) Paperback – November 1, 2001... instead. Much easier version, modern day english. I included a picture of the more readable version.

Foxe's Book of Martyrs is a great book, but this is an edited version that does not always follow the original. This edition is much more difficult to read than many others available.

Besides the Bible, this is one of the classics of the Christian Faith. If you love Christ and His people, you'll find yourself praying for the Martyrs.They are still out there, and we will be. The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Faith. God bless our persecuted brethren!

At almost 2 inches thick and 800 some pages, this is not light reading, but I've found, like most "The Missing Manual Books", this to be very good reference work. Explanations are clear and helpful, providing step by step guidance in many cases. It is not an intimidating engineering text, but a very good source of information about a complex operating system. In the rare cases it doesn't answer your questions, at least it will give you a clear enough understanding of the topic to ask intelligent questions at the Genius Bar. In the past I have bought books in this series for each Apple Operating System as I have updated to new versions, and will continue to do so. I recommend without reservation.

I am a newbie when it comes to the Mac world of computers and needed a GREAT manual to get up to speed on my new MacBook Pro. After reading lots of reviews about lots of possible manuals, I decided on this one and after using it for a week I am VERY impressed by the information contained in it! The presentation and the brood subjects covered are excellent and actually exceeded my expectations! For example, it explanation about how to use BootCamp helped a lot and many other publications skipped over this subject, etc.. Thank You for a great manual!

Stephen Skinner is the founder and publisher of Feng Shui for Modern Living magazine, the world's best-selling magazine on feng shui, which was available in 41 countries and published simultaneously in English and Chinese. Wow! Where to begin. Forget everything you thought you knew about Feng Shui and dig deep into flying star.It's tricky even with this great book but you'll be glad you invested the time to relearn any possible myths and possible bad Feng Shui habits.What I like best about this book is learning how the way the Chinese measure time different from the western world and how that shifts every thing you think you know about Feng Shui.I've possibly read about 25 Feng Shui books cover to cover and I think this one has the most truthful and linear explanation.But flying star is somewhat complex for the untrained eye so don't have any shame about getting your questions from this book answered by a certified practitioner.Best of luck.

I am 5 chapters in and have perused the whole book. I wanted to learn Flying Star Feng Shui and this book is proving to be an excellent introduction. It is packed with information and while it seems a bit cumbersome at times I think this has more to do with how much there is to this system than lack of elegant organizing/editing.The author makes it very clear that you will gain a great foundation from this book and also that you can spend a lifetime studying this so the expectations are realisticThis is not "Flying Star Feng Shui Lite" - it is meaty and will take some study, practice, and re-reads to really grasp it - which makes me delighted that I am getting so much quality information for the price of a book. A great value.I can see why this book might make some people's head hurt. It has many culturally foreign concepts and views (if you are Westerner) in addition to the learning curve of taking on a new area of study.So far I would recommend this.

I've been classically trained and a practitioner for years but this book is so comprehensive that I've gained a deeper understanding of flying stars and how to interpret them. I think it's likely a bit more than the uninitiated can comprehend, but a fabulous resource for those who have prior training in Feng Shui and flying stars.

The book has a very lucid protocol with copious tables and enlightening background explanations including important historical developments. There are 3000 characters in the Chinese alphabet which emphasizes the utility of historical examples, etc.

An excellent book on Flying star feng shui step by step. Very comprehensive cover on lots of topics including a very good review on general feng shui. A very valuable and irresplaceable book for a long time. Plenty of figures and tables to assist in understanding the topics and for practical use. An inexpensive book with invaluable information about Flying star feng shui. Although there were some inclarity reading this book but it gets clearer as you continue reading.

I haven't read it yet, but I'm sure it's amazing.

A wonderful book, and very complex. It does take time to read slowly and study. But the knowledge that one gains is well worth the time and effort to go through this book.
